That is a ridiculous deal! I doubt Bergevin can match that.
It's set the benchmark. A lot of Ppl thought Carlson might only get 2-3 years.
Now it's advantage Subban in negotiations when it comes to contract length. They can't afford to not match that term now, and on a contract of that term based on Carlsons extensions and Pacioretty, Subbans value is going to fall between 4.5-5m per given his play, marketing power and the market (more taxes here).
As I wrote on the trade board, I'd do 5 or 6 years at 4.5 M per right now. But would Meehan? But how much more can he ask for after this Carlson deal?
Subban and Carlson are very comparable in terms of role, situation (both of them had to take on a huge role due to Markov/Green injuries) and offensive stats. Eric Engels laid out the case quite nicely in a few tweets.
Subban is a year older, so 1 year closer to UFA, that's the big difference.
If we can get 6 years out of it, I'd be fine with 4.75 M per year as well. The only issue with 6 years is Price and Subban would become UFA's at the same time.
One thing I am reasonably confident about, if the Habs and Meehan were talking about a 2 year deal, it most likely would have already been done.

The Carlson signing seems to have got the young D RFA ball rolling. Only a matter of time before Subban is signed now. I think at this point anyone thinking he gets short term is crazy.
It's not happening today if that's what you are hinting here. And who knows when signing players will be possible again after midnight tonight.
MA Godin wrote on twitter a few hours ago to look for a Price/Pacioretty type 2 year deal once the lockout is resolved. But if that was the case...why isn't he signed? How tough can it really be to do a 2 year deal? There HAD to have been talks for 4+ years for it to not be solved by now.
I'm kind of glad they didn't sign him right now. Teams just shelled out $200M in 24 hours for a handful of players on the eve of the lockout. Poor owners have no money and poor players are getting screwed. The optics are really bad. Glad PK and the Habs weren't part of that.
