For Old School Fans Only

I may be the only one but I found the clip in the attached column to be compelling. I started getting interested in hockey just a few years after 1966/67 and it really fun to see a relatively young Bobby Hull with his banana stick and Jean Béliveau gliding around the ice like a prince among men.

Nice post. HNIC really was special. I pre date this era by another decade in terms of watching hockey, but the quality on ice just before expansion was truly amazing.

This was before one of the most significant rule changes in history ... 3rd man in.

Fights almost always turned into donnybrooks.

I for one think fighting should be gone. Primitive and silly. Polls find candians about 50 - 50 on fighting; in the states most want to keep it.

Fighting is stupid. The last great, passion driven fight I can remember was Iginlaa-Lecavalier in the SCF. Sick of fights as retaliation for clean hits, goons going at it for no real reason, or "momentum shift" fights. Play the game, and punish stupid stuff accordingly.
Money has made it unlikely that star players can fight their own battles, so either get rid of the instigator and have accountability, or call all penalties the same way the entire game and in the playoffs.
And shrink the elbow and shoulder pads. They're more of a concern than big goalie pads ever were!

I'm old school... but not quite that old school. My hockey memories only go back to the early '70's... about the time the Canucks arrived on the scene. Great video though, it's nice to see those guys in colour and motion.

How did this turn into a discussion about fighting anyway? I'm fine with the occasional fight, but I wouldn't necessarily be happy with a return to Broadstreet Bullies style hockey. Damn, there I am discussing it.

I don't mind seeing the boys drop 'em and go.

But if fighting disappeared from the game tomorrow, I wouldn't miss it.

I only brought it up because of the donnybrooks showed in the footage. remember those days.

I actually think fghting will be gone soon, or much harsher penalties for it anyways ..... because of concussions
