Anton Volchenkov to Carolina (deadline deal)

Hypothetically if the Hurricanes are in a serious playoff//division win push, when the deadline rolls around, adding a legit shut down guy would be pretty beneficial.

What would it take?

So something maybe like Jokinen + 2nd as a starting point?

That is pretty big overpayment from what I have see thrown around on him in most threads. Think it would be easier to get him right now, Devils have 8 d-man so a decision will be made before the season on one of them and I don't know they will revisit it later. On top of the fact you need Volchenkov to okay the deal to Carolina to begin with. Also likely easier before the season starts if he would consider Carolina at all.

Why not take Tallinder, he does not have a NTC and is more available?

Volch for Jokinen?

I would also take a 2nd rounder most likely.

but as it has been said, the Devils only true need is a top 6 winger.

He's arguably the better defensive player, but I'd imagine Carolina covets a guy like Volchenkov for the whole "grit and toughness" factor.

I'd do that in a heartbeat. That'd be overpayment from Carolina, I think. Valuing Volchenkov is tough because he's played more of a depth roll in New Jersey than Devils fans were expecting.

At the deadline I don't think it would be likely, because the Devils expect to be in a playoff spot also and wouldn't be willing to give up big pieces of the defence then. In the offseason it is possible.

Once again, Volch will not waive his NTC regardless of the standings, so it's more relevant to discuss Tallinder.

But, for the sake of answering the OP, I'd expect either a 1st or a top-6-projected winger and a 2nd.

Volchenkov would be a very good pick-up for Carolina.
I think Carolina has to upgrade the blueline
Volchenkov is a shotblocking machine.

I like the moves Carolina has made thus far but if they do not add to the blueline,it might be for nothing.

This is what I would ask for as well.

big assumption being made that teh Devils would be in selling mode?

I have a feeling that they are going to fighting the Canes for the PO's so I HIGHLY doubt they are moving A-Train to the Hurricanes.

Why would they do that, if they are in playoff contention like the OP said? You can pretty much ask for a highly rated prospect, draft picks, etc.

The OP's assumption that the Devils will be out of a playoff spot at the deadline is a rather large one, and probably not a valid one.

Therefore, Devils fans are responding in the only way that makes sense, making the assumption that a Devils defenceman will get traded during the remainder of this offseason, and that we're most interested in a top 6 forward in return.

I would prefer Ruutu than Jokinen for Volchenkov. He has more grit and more of a natural winger. Also why wait til deadline, do it now. Devils need another top 9 forward and can afford to shed one of the defense, even with Fayne rehabbing from injury.

If the Devils make a deal I would expect that they would want to improve their team and not just dump pieces.

Why would you want Ruutu at 4.75 for 4 more years over Jokinen at 3 mil for two more years? If you dont like Volch's contract, you wont like Ruutu's.

Ruutu is essentially the Forward version of Volchenkov, contract wise

Maybe a package of one of Ryan Murphy/Jamie McBain/Justin Faulk and one of Carolina's disappointing forward prospects (Zach Boychuk/Drayson Bowman).

That does not fill a need the devils have right now, but hell yes to that proposal. They will take one of those young dmen and run.

No way carolina does it.

Tallinder > Volchenkov
He can actually do things with the puck besides bounce it off the glass and ice it

You are probably going to want to delete this before Carolina fans flame the crap out of you.
