Bizarre pre-season in the Q

I don't get it...the regular season doesn't start until September 20th. Yet there are exhibition games going on now, 5 weeks before the season starts. Why?

Furthermore, the Remparts last pre-season game is on August 25th and they only play 4 of them, yet Halifax's last game is on September 16th and they play 8 games?

Can anyone come up with answers? I am puzzled, seems like a clear cut advantage for certain teams.

They pushed back the start of the season to allow more guys to come back from NHL camps

But they have no choice but to start training camp at the same date because of the CEGEP rules

Can't have 60 CEGEP kids at your camp and send them back to their hometown whenever you feel like it... I think by Monday's trade deadline teams need to have made a significant number of cuts and will likely only keep the players that should be part of the team + a few extras

So yes basically most teams will have 25 players on roster and will play exhibition games for one full month... not fun but what can you do

Else look at the Sea Dogs first couple of regular season games last year... basically just a bunch of rookies/tryouts because everyone was still at NHL camps

That's the way it works in the WHL and OHL but they don't have CEGEP

Makes sense, would still like to know why Quebec is only playing 4 pre-season games early on in the pre-season schedule though while other teams are playing twice as many, heh.

The kids can't miss a ton of school.

Because Paddy Roy gets what he wants and runs the Q... Err, I mean school maybe?

I guess they want to try doing it another way, maybe more about conditionning, also there's less cegep cuts for Maritimes usually so the team is finalized earlier for Quebec teams, overall.

Gatineau has one of the stranger pre-season scheds. They played last night and tonight vs. Blainville and don't play again for three full weeks until they play Ottawa.
