I'd give it to Sinclair whether she was suspended or not. I'm also good with Ian Millar or either coxswains. People say they aren't as important as the rowers but I disagree, they have to wear so many hats, coach, manager, shrink.

Ian Miller has confirmed he's praticipating in Rio? Glad to hear that. Especially considering how the Canadian equestrian team got screwed over in London.

Definitely I'd give the closing ceremony honors to Sinclair. Her performance was absolutely legendary. One of the greatest individual efforts I've ever seen in any soccer game, men or women.

Yeah, he confirmed it in an interview on CTV at the beginning of the Games. Then again, wanting to go and qualifying to go are two different things, not to mention things like health, etc that may play a role at his age.

I think gold medal winner Rosie MacLennan deserves a mention also

All right. Sinclair for flag bearer. What a run. I didn't hear anyone, anywhere predicting this team could win a medal.

Is there an IOC rule that you need to name one person to carry the flag? It would be awesome if they could name the whole team and have a sort of organized passing system or something. I've never seen that done by any country before, though, so I doubt it's an option.

I think Sinclair is the obvious choice if you are forced to select one. The others still probably have at least one olympics left, if not more. Sinclair probably will be long retired by 2016.

And, she has been our best player and leader for a very long time now. Sinclair definitely deserves it.

Sinclair is 29... I think considering how good she looks today she'll be around for the World Cup in 2015 and will stick around for Rio in 2016.

Canada is hosting the 2015 world cup so I doubt sinclair will retire before then. I would also make her the flag bearer considering the womens soccer team bronze medal is canada's biggest story at these games and sinclair is their best player

IMO the deserving candidates for flag bearer in order.

Christine Sinclair - Maybe the best player in the world, biggest story of the games for Canada.
Rosie MacLennan - Our only gold.

Émilie Heymans - Got a medal for the 4th straight games.
Lesley Thompson-Willie - Only Canadian to ever medal in 5 different Olympic games.
Ian Miller - Competing in his 10th Olympic games for Canada.
Diane Matheson - Scored the Bronze winning goal in stoppage time.

Sinclair is our flag bearer.

As per the Toronto Star.

How Rosie MacLennan is not the flag-bearer is baffling to me. When she wins the only gold, it's just a slap in the face to not give it to her.

The flag bearer isnt always a gold winner.
Christine Sinclair had the best performance by a Canadian athlete at these games. Rosie would have been a nice choice too but Canada winning a bronze in soccer was a much bigger story than Rosie winning a gold in trampoline.

Also Canada's flag bearer for the closing ceremonies at the last summer games was from trampoline. Time for something different.

There's also something to be said about winning a medal in a niche spot with few actively competitive nations and winning a team medal in the world's most popular one.

I could understand that if Canada won multiple golds, but that single gold sticks out like a sore thumb. One person from Canada walked away at the top of their respective sport. Seems like an absolute no-brainer to me to have that person be flag-bearer.

If there were individual medals in Soccer, Sinclair would have won gold. She was the leading scorer of the tournament and led her country to a bronze medal, when we were ranked 7th.

Not to mention, everyone in Canada knows we deserved to be playing for gold in Soccer anyway.

To me the highlight from this game that sticks out the most from these games inst Rosie's gold its the soccer bronze.

Christine Sinclair may be the best women in the worlds most popular game and it is about time she got some recognition for that.

I'm happy for Sinclair but I was also hoping it would be Rosie!

I'm with you on this. As much as Sinclair was dominant, soccer is still a team sport and that one gold medal spared us from worse embarrassment. Imagine going home with 0 gold? That single gold was extremely important IMO.

Winning gold isn't the requirement to be a flag bearer in closing ceremonies.

Look at 2008.

You'd have a pretty hard time trying to argue that despite only walking away with a bronze, Sinclair isn't at the top of her sport.
