Santino reportedly retires from in-ring competition

Quote:
According to reports in Toronto from fans in attendance, Santino Marella has announced his retirement from in-ring competition. Santino told the crowd that he suffered his third neck injury. Santino was born in Mississauga, Ontario but has been billed as being from Calabria, Italy. Santino, 35, said earlier this week in an interview that his career was winding down and was interested in staying with the company in a non-wrestling role. He’s been featured on the WWE Network pre-shows in recent weeks.

During his speech he apologized for the crowd for not being able to perform and said that he is proud to be Canadian

I know there's a lot of people who don't like him, but he has always done a great job with everything they've given him. Gone a bit stale now, but he was gold a few years ago - especially with Kozlov. Hopefully he has a moment on Raw.

Now they can pair up Emma with Fandango instead.

Santino was actually a pretty good worker until they gave him that gimmick.

I wonder if he'll still be in backstage segments.

As stupid as the santino character became, I gotta respect the man who had to deal with being that character and putting his all into it. He nailed that character and you gotta respect that. Congrats on a very respectable career Santino!

Kinda disappointed to see a few disrespectful comments in here. The gimmick may have gone stale long ago but he put his all into it and that is a shame he has to retire from injury. Hopefully they keep him with the company in some form so he still has a job.

Right. He was the one who ruined Emma and not the writers for putting her with him. Come on.

For a "comedy" character Santino was awesome. And he also seemed to be a chill guy outside the WWE. I like what he's doing with his Battle Arts Academy.

His debut was really fun to watch.

I had no idea he had that many neck injuries. Were they recent or stuff that just added up through his career?

I didn't like his comic character, it completely annoyed me. But over time he grew on me and really started to like him. Its entertainment and it is nice to mix in a little fun if done well. I loved him & Kozlov together. Hopefully they keep him around in some kind of on air role.

I remember reading an interview he had a few weeks back saying his in ring career was near and end but he hoped to continue working with the company. Guess it finished sooner than he thought.

Hopefully he gets a Raw moment.

The guy is actually quite the athelete if you take away the doofus gimmick and the fake accent. Sad way to go.

Emma was terrible before being paired up with Santino.

Loved Santino when he first started as a heel. Always lawl'ed when he would talk on the mic during his opponents entrances.

Kudos on him though for working through such a stale gimmick.

Too bad for Santino, but he made the right decision for his health. He's got a MMA gym that he runs in addition to WWE, so I'm guessing his position with WWE going forward will be as a backstage agent (at least part time) and helping out with training at the Development Center from time to time. I'd also put money on him getting some type of temporary Raw GM role down the road.

I will miss the Honky-A-Meter.

I still laughed at the wrap up of his twin sister angle.

He was a pretty under rated wrestler. But he was saddled with the comedy gimmick and did a good job.

I still remember when he stole Jerry Lawlers sub sandwich from him during a rant.

I also like the Royal Rumble interview where he trashes New York sports teams (Yankees: "Ooohhh...a mosquito, let's lose the playoffs!) and says New Yorkers have to resort to cheering for a football team from New Jersey to hope for any winners. Then Maria asks the MSG crowd if they want to see her in Playboy, "Don't listen to these sheep, you could ask them if they would like Hepatitis and they would all cheer!"
