Clay Wilson signs with Donbass Donestk (KHL)

It was posted on eliteprospects.com.

Obviously a bit surprising considering he has a deal in place for next season and it's also a 1-way deal as well, so he would have been good money even if he was in the AHL.

I also thought there was a NHL/KHL transfer agreement in place that (mostly) prevented these types of signings.

Interesting. I think he was outside looking in pretty hard... But still, was on the one way, weird.

Gio 2.0? I can hope. But surprising he would leave a 1 way here.

Does this mean we carry 1 less contract?

Good for him, guess he's seen enough of the AHL.

I would actually not be surprised if he has somekind of a gentlemans' agreement with the Flames about this. He's on a 1-way deal and would most probably be a healthy scratch for most of the season so now he gets to play in a top league and the Flames get an extra contract + some capspace (I think?).

It should clear the contract for Calgary. Great move an was probably the flames idea. I bet Karrlson is the next one to go.

IIRC the KHL is the only major Euro league that doesn't have a transfer agreement with the NHL.

For some reason I read the team name as dumbass. Well good for Wilson, tax free dollars is always good!

Well, they don't have a binding agreement, more of one of the handshake variety. But for the most part, since Radulov went to the KHL, players haven't signed in the opposing league if they have a contract with a team in their current league.

Wilson was a decent depth option to have around though, and makes for a nice fill-in if two of Gio/Wideman/Brodie/Smith were injured at once, for example.

Doesn't really effect the Flames aside from maybe freeing up a contract, but this will hurt the Heat, esp. considering they also let Connelly go.

Guess he didn't want to play in the American Hockey League anymore.

Good for him, hope he does well there. Always liked the guy even if he wasn't a regular with the Flames.

Good for him. There was no place for him on our roster. He was, at best, ninth on our depth chart.

Don't really like this, but I'm also indifferent to it. Smith is clearly ahead of him and we already have Babchuk and Smith as extra dman. It would of been nice to keep him for depth, but being that he was on a 1-way he probably would of been waived to start the season.

Best of luck to him!

Hopefully Feaster tried to trade him for... something, anything. If he didn't, it'd be a textbook example of bad asset management.

I highly doubt a career ahler is worth anything on the trade market they are so easy to sign.

The only thing I absolutely hate about this, is was more than likely Abby's MVP last year. And while he probably would never see the light of the NHL with the depth chart in front of him... It really hurts the Abby team, hopefully someone like Wotherspoon can step up maybe... Or Lamb, because that's a ton of points and minutes to cover from the backend.
