Devils - Islanders

To NJ: Islander's 2013 1st Round Pick

To NYI: Anton Volchenkov

Reasoning:
The Devils have 8 defensemen signed for next season.
They also have to give up a first rounder in one of the next two years.

The Isles will need a veteran defenseman when Visnovsky goes back to the Ducks.
They also will need to reach the cap floor.

Seems like a Win -Win. Is the value there?

No way. Why would we give our 1st to a division rival?

And last time we made a trade it ended up terrible.

Yeahhhh no thanks. The isles wouldn't want to deal a potential lottery pick for volchenkov... Granted I'm hoping it's not one but still

A potential lotter pick? Every team that doesn't make the playoffs has a chance to win the lottery. If the Isles improve their D, they can probably make a run for 7-11 in the east.

Not for a first. Volchenkov is coming off of a middling season as well.

If the Vish deal gets voided, the Isles will have a Second Rounder again, which is more than fair value than Volchenkov.

Volchenkov is not worth a high first round pick

As a devils fan. No way. You need to throw in Okposo as well.

I think the value leans in our favor, but I'd much rather fetch a top-6 forward rather than futures with our defensemen.

not a chance its fair value given the fact that it might be a lottery pick. overpayment

I think a 2nd or 3rd+ would be better value. I would give him up for the Isles 2nd in a heartbeat

Volchenkov was part of the best PK in the league, as well as a record setting one.

Islanders need a solid vet D. He can definitely help them. He is also signed for 4 more years unlike Vis who didnt even want to commit 1 year to the isles.

The value might not be completely fair.

What if the devils throw in a third rounder?

Volch and 3rd rounder
for
Isles 1st rounder

Volchenkov would be the best realistic option on the market, with that said, there are about three problems. He plays for a division rival, his salary is high, and the price would probably be a second rounder plus, which we don't have.

I dont think the isles and devils are rivals. they have worked out trades as early as last year (rolston for hunter) and took in mike mottau. Now they signed eric boulton. I think it is safe to day that they like devils' players (rejects).

I never get a sense of rivalry between those teams. Maybe pre lockout.

They're still in the same division. The Isles are not gonna trade a potential top 5 pick and risk watching him light it up against them 6x a year. You can go into all the technicalities you want, maybe they aren't "rivals" and yes, there are 14 "lottery" teams but that doesn't make this proposal any less horrible.

You're also assuming Visnovsky wins his case, which you have absolutely no basis on. If you knew more about the situation, you'd know that even if he does win his case he might very well end up on the Islanders. And if you've been following CBA talks at all, the cap is likely to lower and the Isles will be fine.

I still want forwards coming back in return for our defensemen. Believe me, I love the lopsidedness of the OP, but it doesn't meet our needs now.

Im assuming Vis leaves the isles the same way you are assuming the cap goes down.
There have been rumblings of both so for you to refute mine and accept yours is crap.

The value might not be there with the first rounder but the way the isles make trades, i wouldnt be surprised if it wasnt close. Devils could add a 3rd to make it right.

Plus the isles drafting hasnt been spectacular. The only draft pick doing any kind of damage is Taveres and that was an obvious choice.

Division rivals dont make these kinds of trades one-on-one.

It is striking to me to believe that anyone, regardless of the team they support would not consider teams within a division any division rivals.

Further, its just a poor deal especially for the Islanders.

Volchenkov is not worth a 1st round pick under any circumstance within a division or not. he is a stay-at-home type and one who is a second pair defender. That is not worth a first round pick.

I concur with what several Isles fans have said. Snow is not Milbury. No way he gives them another Parise like Milbury did.

Lastly, the concept the Isles are going to lose Visnovsky back to the Ducks, or that they won't make the cap floor is not really viable. First, I don't think Viz has much of a case, and I also think even if it did break in his favor, he would work the deal out with Snow and the Isles. Second, the Islanders will get to the floor. They always have and always will. There will be camp invitees, another signing from that, and perhaps another deal is out there. Plus the floor is going to drop as will the cap ceiling.

I'm not against trading that first rounder, but it would have to be for an impact player. Volchenkov is not an impact player. (Duh, if he was you wouldn't be trying to trade him.)

Besides, the way Volchenkov plays, I'm not optimistic about his longevity.

Cheers,

Dan-o

There we go. I doubt Isles fans go for that, though.

No. Value is totally wrong, and Isles won't be trading high picks off unless its a blue chip asset where the salary also works out.

If by chance they were willing to assume that contract, which they aren't and won't be for a long time, the best thing you'd probably get out of them is maybe a couple of secondary prospects Mayfield/Ness + Ullstrom. Maybe not even that much.
