So, what you mean is having a Bryzgalov isnt as much important as Having a good defensive system.
What is the point to have a Goalie who is suppose to make the difference if he doesn't make a difference and still need a good defense in front of him?
I remember all these expert saying summer 2011 that Bryzgalov would at last shine behind the great defensive of the Flyers and would leave Phoenix in ruins.
People seem really at lost when it come to explain something like the Bryzgalov vs Mike Smith performance when its rather simple: The difference between goalie skill nowadays is closer than it appear, Smith and Bryzgalov performance this season are explained by luck/normal variance we can expect from a goalie from season to season. It have a greater impact than Defensive/coaching.
And we constantly overestimate the impact of an elite goalie over an average one. Nowadays, the average goalie is so good that everytime there is a thread about the top 5 /top 10 goalie in the league, we will find 15+ goalie named ''top 5'' and 25+ Goalies named "Top 10".
To conclude, since the beginning i was saying it, it was wrong to give that much money to Bryzgalov, not where there was other good and cheaper UFA goalie option in 2011.
