Ryan McDonagh vs Nikita Nikitin

Both young, both promising but both heading to play different defensive role. Overall McDonagh is awesome in one on one even against the best forwards around the league while Nikitin features an impressive all-around arsenal with high skillset. Personally, I've got an opinion even though it's close between those 2 talents.

What's yours ?

Ps: Please, back up your arguments if possible.

Nikitin-Tyutin pair was one of the best last season, but McDonagh-Girardi was better, while McDonagh was the one that anchored that pairing. I have to go with McDonagh, but I am a Rangers fan.

The term AINEC gets thrown around too loosely around here that it has been diluted in value.

So instead of saying McDonagh AINEC, I will need to say "McDonagh by a million"

Nikitin just isn't on the level of McDonagh, and it's really not even close. Nikitin is good and I was a fan of his in St. Louis, but he just doesn't have top pairing potential for a good team.

McDonagh, not close.

The results of this poll will be a blow out, which is a result of a bad comparison. Nikitin is a fine D-Man, but just not near McDonagh's level.

Not so much people knew this already, I applaud you sir for this knowledge and advanced stats will certainly not disagree you neither. their numbers together were impressive.

McDonagh-Girardi was impressive too. A great pairing, no doubt about it.

Nikitin. AINRC.

Am I doing it right?

Seriously you can make a decent case for Nikitin.
McDonagh 32 points in 82 games
Nikitin 32 points in 54 games.

Nikitin has obvious advantage offensively and when he was paired with Tyutin they were one of the best NHL pairs defensively, even though they were on the team with the worst NHL goaltending. McDonagh/Girardi and Weber/Suter were the 2 best pairs and Russians were 3rd.
http://nhlnumbers.com/2012/5/30/top-defensive-pairings

Both McDonagh and Nikitin were basically rookies and recently were included in the NHL top-50 defensemen by the bleacherreport. The biggest Nikitin's flaw is his skating, which is average at best, and that was a big problem on the European rinks.

Both of those guys could be an elite defensemen for the next decade if McDonagh improves his offence and Nikitin improves his skating. The difference between them isn't that big right now.

No top pairing potential ?
So for a 26 years old defence-man with only 102 games played he has no time left to develop, adapt his game, I guess.

Just for information

He was the CBJ's top pair with Tyutin.
He put up 32 pts in only 62 played (hugely forgotten)
He faced the 21st toughest opposition around the league for a defence-man
He was a positive Corsi player, which is incredible playing with CBJ
He had a 44% offensive zone starts and an impressive 50% offensive zone finish.

I made firstly this poll to see how would react people when you compare a well known stud and another good but (completely) underrated kid.

McDonagh is probably above Nikitin, I don't really care who's better in fact, just see that I didn't even compare Nikita's stats to Ryan's even though it's way closer than you would ever admit....

So anyone saying "McDonagh AINEC" is wrong, and plain wrong. I'll say it again McDonagh's better mostly because he's able to deal with the toughest opposition around the league but Nikitin is typically the kid that doesn't get any credit just because he's playing for a poor team that nobody cares.

Trust me or not but numbers don't lie: Nikitin's stats last season were very close to an elite defence-man.

McDonagh is better, but Nikitin is probably the most underrated player in the league. He was brilliant defensively and quite productive offensively. Yeah it's McDonagh, but it's not AINEC-worthy. Nikitin is a legit top-pairing guy in my mind. Probably a solid #2.

Good post.
I just didn't count his 8 pointless games for the St.Louis last season. He had no idea what was going on around. He doesn't speak English and there's nobody who speaks Russian in St.Louis.

Yeah Nikitin is underrated and out up great numbers last year, but it's still McDonagh by a mile.

That's why St-Louis made a great decision to trade him. That deal was a win-win for everyone, it happens sometimes.

Credit where its due.

I didn't even know Nikitin was playing in the NHL. and i'm pretty sure McDonagh is gonna run away with this being younger and actually playing for a good team.
