I fear this will sound snarky because tone is hard in online forums, but it is not.

But of course it is far down on your list of memories. It benefited your guys.

I bet the Russians rank it a lot higher. Probably the most significant moment of the entire series. Imagine if Canada had lost Espo in that series in the exact same manner. I'd bet you'd still be irate, and rightly so.

I think that's fair to say. We are always shown the Henderson goal, Espo's speach, etc and Clark's 2-hander is almost mentioned as a footnote followed with a chuckle. It was a goon move but... Oh well :-P

I wonder how the series would have gone with Orr and the WHA guys (Hull) participated.

Sanderson probably would have been in Clarke's spot and Clarke doesn't play or plays less minutes. I think Clarke was a bit of an outsider on the team and ended up seeing a lot more icetime than everyone expected (I think same thing for Parise he wasn't expected to be a crucial player.)

WHA guys being ineligible definitely weakened the team no question about that. No Orr/WHA players would have been a valid excuse if the Soviets won.

Why didn't Orr play in '72?

According to @WHLFromAbove AKA RenegadeStylings it sounds like Subban is in net and Hamilton paired with Ouellet on D....

Awesome for Subban to get to do this

Valeri Kharlamov may be the best hockey player of that generation not named Orr. He is remembered for being slashed by Bobby Clarke more than he is for humiliating the absolute best the NHL had to offer for 5 games in 1972. If he could have played in the NHL he'd have been a Bossy 10-15 years earlier (think speed instead of shot unlike Bossy though) and while Orr may have been better there would be a speedy forward doing some of the same things (as we all know there was not and no NHLer could keep up with Orr.)
I'm not sure how old you are or where you're from but you can't judge that series based on today's game thinking or without all the facts. The Russians had something to prove and the Canadian players thought the series was a joke. The Russians were fit while our guys were in midsummer form, drinking beer and barbecuing steak. Back then players got in shape during camp in Oct, almost nobody trained during the summer. What Bobby Clarke did was wrong but the NHL was a nasty business back in the 70's, it was common place and acceptable for a team to go after the oppositions best player.
The Russians had some good players, (Valeri Kharlamov was a great player) and IMO they were way ahead in the systems game in 72 but no way the Russians come close if the NHLers were in midseason form.

Espo and Henderson were the only players who could skate with the Russians the rest of the team completely disgraced themselves and were inferior players and got booed off the ice after the last game in Canada.

Hopefully Russia wins and the KHL poaches lots of NHL talent if there is a lockout. Go Russia!

(PS- My favorite Bruins fans are our Canadian fans who are likely to read that sorry for the troll post I just root for Russia internationally.) Wish maybe the greatest hockey tournament ever could be remembered like the Bobby Orr 76 Canada Cup but its not cause of what Clarke did *this was a better competition of course.
I am not Canadian, nor was I around during that time, but I am pretty damn sure I would be on my feet cheering on Clarke.

He did what many Americans/Canadians wanted to do but never got the opportunity. He did, and took full advantage of it.

Malcolm Subban ( @SubbZero30 ) gets the nod in Canada's net for game one. #bruins 1st round pick in 2012.

Should be interesting to see how he does.

Is this a year thing?

Last time I remember it was when Lucic was playing.

OK,,

Don't complain.

Living here in Australia (14 hours ahead of the U.S. east coast) just about all the Bruins games are scheduled at mid-morning. If there is a B's matinee game I have to get up around 2 am if I want to watch.

I think we play them quite often in the early parts of the season but this format , two there - two here , not so much. Because of the 72' and it being 40 years is the main reason for the format.

I think

Here's the long explanation:

http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/story/?id=402706

Quote:
The series - which will also mark the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series - replaces this season's Canada's National Junior Team Summer Development Camp and serves as part of player evaluations for the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

Most impressive for CAN after 1st: Subban ( #Bruins), Sutter ( #Jets), Scheifele ( #Jets), Hamilton ( #Bruins). Liked Rattie ( #Blues) too

I'm guessing this guy's a Bruins fan? I didn't notice Dougie at all and Subban had 4 shots.

Pretty sure Rossy's a Leafs' fan.

Russia's first goal (Slepyshev) was due in some part to Dougie's poor defensive coverage (though it was after this tweet).
