Former Oiler Tikkanen finds a home in the Far East
Jim Armstrong / Associated Press
Posted: 2 hours ago

TOKYO (AP) - Former Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers forward Esa Tikkanen never had any trouble motivating himself during an NHL career that spanned almost two decades. Now that he's pushing 40, the Helsinki native has found a whole new reason to come to the rink.

I can see it in a few years. Sather knows Tikkanen from the Edmonton days, and he did play for the Rangers and was a part of the 94 Rangers. I can see Sather calling him down the line to be an assistant or something along those lines. Imagine having Tikkanen as our coach an teaching our players to do what he did, make the other team take penalties. Imagine having the most PP advantage in the league, we just need to score on them. Just a thought. I would like Graves as one of our coaches as well.

well we tried in 98-99 when we had him and did not play well. If it was a tryout then Id consider. He was one of my favorite Rangers.

i was pumped that year when they got him. I went to his first game. It was against the Caps, he ran over the goalie in that game. Richter also stopped a penalty shot in that one...ahh the memories.

I remember reading that Tikkanen thought he was signing with Halla Winia to coach and they thought they were signing him to be a player. Obviously there were translation difficulties and that's why he's wearing both hats now.

Didn't he talk to the Rangers about a possible coaching position last year?

One of my favourite players, I would love to see him as a coach. I fail to see how coaching in South Korea is a good career move, though...
