Would probably stay up to watch if I didn't have to report to work at 7:30 tomorrow morning

The surface is quite nice. You could wear flip flops and your feet would be perfectly comfortable. Granted, your head would be frostbitten, but whatever.

Considering it takes around 14 minutes for a radio signal to reach Earth from Mars, I'd be impressed with live footage of the rover.

But there may be a photo if all communications work out ideally. There's a variety of communications scenarios where we don't know the outcome of the landing for as many as three days. Halfway during decent, the lander goes beyond the horizon of Mars, meaning that the signal has to be picked up by the Mars Odyssey Orbiter, and relayed back to Earth.

I'm up. I don't care if I have to be at work early tomorrow.

First pics expected at 2 AM EST, or luckily a reasonable 11 PM Pacific

We'll be lucky to see any footage from the rover. Mostly will be nerds reading and decoding signals and making out what's happening. Remember, the signal alone will take 14 minutes to come from mars and reach earth. It will take 7 minutes for the rover to enter the atmosphere + land. So when we get the first signal back, the rover was either alive or dead on Mar's surface for 7 minutes.

Here's a video that explains a bit more

We might not even get a signal for a few days.

Yeah I read about the possible issues and the delay because the signal has to go from mars [to maybe a satellite] to us. But just wanted to know if they'd post any pictures or videos. That would be amazing to see a video footage from Mars' surface.

Looks like it should be hitting Mars atmosphere in about 15 minutes. Not sure exactly what we're going to see though.

Yeah, I know it would be amazing! I don't think we'll see any pictures /video today to be honest.

I'm really loving this live coverage. they are explaining things really nice with diagrams etc. I think either way it's going to be an interesting night. Even if they lose contact. Imagine. no one will know what happened. That room will be tense. worth watching
