The (almost) best card I got out of my pack was a very nice Modano patch with a dandy autograph...and a big gouge in the front of the cardboard. I contacted Upper Deck, and they basically said too bad.

The first pack of SP Authentic I ever bought and I pulled the Crosby rookie. The guy at the store offered to help me sent to Beckett for grading and it came back BGS 9.5. Then I went bat crazy looking for Crosby rookie cards.

Yeah, you would think the premier and most expensive set would be better protected. The best card I pulled was an awesome patch of the Red Wings logo... with a major dent on one of the corners.

Wow, how have I missed this thread? I got back into collecting in '06 and have been very active since.

Protect your investment.
While I am not big on grading and am not as familiar as some others, Beckett (BGS or BCCG) and PSA are the more common graders used for modern era cards. For vintage, go with PSA or KSA. With that said, a lot of people already grade their new cards like Young Guns at the Toronto Expo (largest hockey card show in the world). Also note that Beckett BGS grading is better than Beckett BCCG grading because the BGS grading is more detailed as it had seperate grade for corners, edges, surface, centering, as well as an overall grade. BCCG has a single grade with no breakdown.

I wondered this myself and after reading on a couple of other forums I post on, it seems that many believe they will be included because the companies will also want them for their higher end releases later this year as well (which makes sense). If they do a rookie card of a player this season in any set, any cards next year would not be considered rookies. Therefore, they wouldn't want to miss the boat - especially UD Young Guns as they are a cornerstone to any collection...even if they release UD2 a little later to get the pictures.

I think if rookies are in for this year, expect a lot more redemptions than normal.

And remember it's an NHLPA decision whether rookies are in this year's product, not the card manufacturers.

What an awesome pull. I bought more SP Authentic than you can imagine, especially in 2005, and I never really got anything decent except maybe a Lundqvist RC.

It wasn't a good thing as it started an obsession that cost me tons of $$$. I went nuts on Upper Deck Ice, what a crappy set. I wanted that Crosby rookie from the '05 set. I eventually got an Ovechkin, but that was after way too many cases opened. What a worthless set that was.

I always liked smelling the cards and licking the wrapper once I got them out of the wrap. Upper deck was very nice quality cards.

I would say that for the majority most are game-worn. However, there are photo shoot jerseys as already pointed out, event worn jerseys, and manufactured patches. In The Game (ITG) is well known for always using game-worn memorabilia. Upper Deck and Panini use photo shoot jerseys for rookies but by the second year they tend to issue game used stuff. UD will also use event worn materials as well. Glenn Anderson is a classic example: http://www.ebay.ca/csc/Hockey-/216/i...mplete=1&rt=nc almost all of those are event worn jerseys from legends games. Some may be game worn, but even the Anderson patch from the Kurri/Anderson Tundra Tandems dual patch /25 is event worn while the Kurri is game used. I know this because I have the /35 and /10 parallels.

Bought a lot of jersey cards for 6 bucks and then traded one of the cards for a card that was $30.

So is a KSA grading of 8.5 the same as a BGS or BCCG 8.5 grading???

I looked at my 8.5 KSA graded Crosby Young Guns rookie card today and all of the corners are perfectly sharp except for one which isn't as sharp by a tiny tiny tiny bit that is almost undetectable by the human eye. Well unless you look at it ridiculously up close.

I'm assuming thats why it's an 8.5 and not a 9 or a 9.5 correct?

As for grading, PSA for vintage (came from an actual wax pack) and BGS for anything modern (post Upper Deck).

As for this year's cards, they only have Baertschi and Kreider for the good RCs. This includes UD Young Guns for series 1. However there are rare redemptions for rookies later in UD S1, like a couple per case, with both RR #1 and RR Oilers being worth hundreds already. I have a feeling these redemptions may not be treated as true RCs. This year's class will be a little weak but next year's may be strong.

I have my eye out on the Stanley Cup Rings for the Kings that came out of this year's Black Diamond.

I have ~65 assorted Yzerman cards from the 80s to present. ~40 assorted Brodeur cards from the 90s to present (Including an oversized one)

Recently, I scored a few good RCs. Claude Giroux, Chris Kreider, and Brandon Yip.

With the unfortunate and precipitous collapse in Pokemon commodity prices over the last several years, I'd imagine that those 3,000 cardboard flaps with glorified tellatubbies on them are worth as much as whatever plastic bag you've been storing them in all these years.

But hey, go to pokeorder.com and check for yourself.

Personally, I couldn't tell you as I am not big into grading and I just know some of the more basic stuff. I believe when they grade though they magnify the card up to 10x or so. If you se any white at all on the corners or edges, it will be docked a bit depending on how minor or bad it is.

I think it's possible that a KSA grade could be the same as BGS, but I think BGS is more reputable because they are maybe more consistant with their grades for newer cards. With that said, KSA is still one of the better companies to use.

Congrats on a Croby YG though. I have yet to add one to my collection but hope to eventually.

Ironically I ended up selling my Crosby YG on Kijiji this afternoon. Got $500 for it.

Am using my newfound $500 on two autographed Mario Lemieux pucks that I'll be buying online through AJ Sports World and also for Centre Ice.

Will probably get a Crosby YG that's graded a 9 or 9.5 through BGS on Ebay later on though... maybe. Autographed and framed pictures and signed pucks are more my main things I like to collect so I'd rather have one of those things instead of one little card. As at least pictures can be hung on my wall and my pucks can be displayed in cubes on my desk for people to see. Where as a card is either just in a binder or in a screwtop case in my drawer.

Know what I mean folks?

I was a big collector from 2002-10. I sold most, but I made sure to hang onto this.

This one was one of my favorites, but I sold it.

I had a huge Stempniak collection back in 2007. lol

Very nice! If you ever become interested, I have a nice Lemieux auto from In The Game that I have available as well.

That was a nice Pietrangelo you had. I have been wanting to add a few of his rookie autos to my collection at some point.

Surprisingly, there are actually at least 2 hardcore Stempniak collectors out there that still collect everything they can of him.

I haven't bought hockey cards since I was a kid in the early 90s. I'm thinking about buying a box, what are the best cards these days? Where would be a good place to start? I see that an unopened box of 'Upper Deck SP Authentic' cards go for around $100-$150 on eBay.
