I do not collect any more, but (at least) for me as a Slovak the most valuable are 3 originally autographed Peter Stastny cards from 1990s.

I used to be hardcore into collecting cards.

I have not bought a pack of cards in years because they are way overpriced & you rarely pull anything decent.

No problem!!
I'm sure you know which one it is, but in case you don't it's the 2001 UD Daniel Sedin Jersey/Auto.. It books for about $40, but since nobody is going to pay for book value, I figured $25-30 seemed realistic.. $30 is the more likely of them though. Only way I could see it being $25 is if shipping is going to cost the person $5+..

In the past year or so I've purchased about 4 boxes of 1990-91 Upper Deck. $30 apiece. Never going to make money off them but it's fun to open them up. Back then was when my brother and all of our friends and I were spending all our cushion money on cards - UD, Pro-Set, OPC, Score, etc. I lost interest about 1995-96. The hobby changed for me.

Guess I'll throw this out there - anyone looking to unload their early to mid/late 90s Modano cards I'll buy. Don't care if it's Pro Set or Score or whatever. Plus 80s/early 90s North Stars like Gagner, Bellows, Casey, Ciccarelli, Hatcher, etc.

Anyone have any recommendations for which 2012/13 series I should go with?

I'm just picking up one of the smaller boxes you can find at local stores and I'm not really sure of the differences between them all.

There seems to be O'Pee Chee, Black Diamond, and Series 1?

Which one's should I go with?

Personally, I've always liked Series 1 more than anything else.. but it depends on what you're looking for.

Base Cards - OPC
Rookies - Series 1
Game Used - Series 1/Black Diamond
Inserts - Series 1
Design - Your choice

I know. I wonder how dealers stay in business, to be honest.

I am not sure why you would say that. I doubt very much that any guy who still collects thinks he is doing it as an investment. I know I sure don't.

I collect cards of players from my hometown to someday give back to those players, their families, and my community. I also collect cards of my favorite players because I like them, and someday I want to give them away and pass them on to my kids or grandkids. I have about 100 000 of them now, and if no one in my family ever sells them, that is just fine. If they can sell them and make something, that's okay too. But they are not my nest egg or anything. They are just cool to have.

Some people smoke, some drink and go to clubs, some go to the casino, some do drugs, some go on lots of trips...I don't do any of those. I collect because it brings me happiness.

I'm a fan of Upper Deck Series 1. Certified by Panini is pretty good also.

What all the different sets have right now for rookies is all that will be out for rookies this year. So those of you looking for Yakupov rookie this year will have to wait until Oct 2013. I saw on eBay that someone was trying to sell an Oilers Rookie Redemption card for quite a bit of money claiming it could be Yakupov. Hopefully no one gets burned buying that one as there's no Yakupov card this year.

Nhl collectables (hockey cards)

I dunno if this is the right forum to make this thread or if I should go to either: ''The history of hockey'' page or whatever.

Anyways... I just got back my old hockey cards. They're mostly from the year 2000 and I was wondering if they were worth anyting?

They're mostly in mint condition. Some has got some wear and tear edges though. Too be clear, there is like 1-2 % that has it, and it's barely noticable. The reason as of why 1-2 % has slightly worn edges is because I have them all in a binder. I just bought cards when I was little cause I liked it. So I didn't put them in seperate cases and what not.

Here's some of them

Upper deck cards (MVP):

Joe Sakic (Col)
Ray Bourque (Col)
Patrick Roy (Col) ''MVP valuable commodities'' card
Patrick Roy (Col) regular MVP card
Milan Hejduk (Col)
Sergei Gonchar (Wash) x3, 1 of them is in silver
Claude Lapointe x2 (NYI)
Peter Bondra (Wash) x2. 1 is from '94 Parkhurst
Dominik Hasek (Buffalo) ''Top Draws''
Mats Sundin (Toronto)
Scott Gomez (NJ) rookie of the year card ( yeah I know)
Martin Brodeur (NJ) - ''MVP valuable commodities'' card
Dominik Hasek - (Buffalo) ''MVP Playmakers (lol wtf?)''
Scott Stevens - NJ
Brian Leetch - NYR
Doug Gilmour - Buffalo Sabres
Sergei Fedorov -Det ''NHL'S best'' card
Steve Yzerman - Det x2, 1 ''season highlight 600th goal''
Dominik Hasek - Buffalo
Michael Peca - Buffalo
Joe Thornton - Boston
Rod Brind'Amour - Carolina
V. Kozlov - Det
Shanahan - Det
Hossa - Ottawa (just a random pic of his face, awful looking card IMO)
Hossa - ''checklist card''
Yashin - Ottawa
Bonk - Ottawa
Timonen - Nashville
Hossa - ottawa, regular card

Stuart
Nolan x2
Ray Whitney (great looking card), 3-4 more whitney cards
Friesen -
Marleau
Ricci
Nabokov/Hannan - split card

all from SJ sharks

Daze - Chicago
LeClair - Flyers ''Top draws''
LeClair - 40 goalseason highlight card

Selanne
Kariya x3, 1 NHL's best card

both ducks cards

Brett Hull - Dallas, nhl's best card

Lehthinen - Dallas

Modano - Dallas

Zubov - Dallas

Hull - Dallas

Langenbrunner - Dallas

Joe Nieuwendyk - Dallas

Brind'Amour - Flyers

Kovalev x2 - Pens

Jagr - Pens

Straka - Pens

Barrasso - Pens

Mario Lemieux - from '93, point leader card (edges are a bit worn out, the only one with not mint condition edges)

Rob Blake - Kings
Pavel Bure - Florida
Marc Savard - Flames x2

Doan - Phx, x2
Tkachuk - Phx, NHL's best card
Robitaille - Kings
Phil Housley - Flames

Pronger, Demitra, Turgeon - St Louis

Lecavalier - Tampa

Deadmarsh - Col, Pacific card

Sorry for the loooooooooooong post, but that's some of the cards I've got.

So I was just wondering if any of these are worth anything. Some of them are really good players, but they're ''only'' 13 years old. Exception for Lemieux ('93) and maybe 1-2 other cards.

Damn you Upper Deck for not making Series 2. I always but the series 1+2 base set each year and put it in a binder as a scrapbook for the season before along with the cards of the retired players and award winners but I can't do that in this one unless I go for that Score/OPC set which is overkill (500-600 cards with too many scrubs).

Without looking them up, some of the inserts might carry some book value but I don't see a ton of money there. The issue you run into there is that the ear from which most of those cards come is before the game used memorabilia/auto craze that currently drives the market.

The cards from those years that carry the most value are the rookies so I would check to see what you've get in that regard.

Anything from before 2000 falls into the dark days when it was still suffering from the damage that Pro-Set and the other early 90s/late 80s products did to it.

Cards that bring in big dollars are pretty much just very vintage stuff in good condition, rookies from the 70s and before in good condition again, newer products with autos/patches and limited print #s.

If its not one of those things, don't expect a ton of cash. You may be able to unload some of it on guys with player collections or guys who may be looking to complete sets.

Okay,

What's the general consensus on getting cards signed and how it affects value. I have a 1977 Gretzky Sportscaster card (the oversized one that some people consider a rookie card). It has some damage to one corner but is in great shape other than that.

I have spoken with Gretzky's people and they will sign it for $200 plus shipping.

Is this likely to add to or decrease the value of the card? Is it worth the $200 or should I just get a cheap card signed if I really want a signature. My thinking is that since this card is not mint to begin with (damage to one corder), then getting it signed might increase demand and raise the price.

You can find an officially auto'ed card on eBay of Gretz for less than 200.

If you pay the player to auto your card it will be considered unofficial. Only you will be able to enjoy the card. No one will pay you over 200 for that auto. Very likely the auto is worth less than 50 unless it comes with a certificate of authenticity.

On another note...

As a rule, you always want something that is an official collectible to be autographed, BUT...you don't want something high end in grade to be autographed. For example if you have a high grade Gretzky rookie, you don't want that signed as the card will be considered damaged because it has writing on it. Now a beat up Gretz RC, getting that signed is no problem. Getting game used equipment signed is no problem because the stuff is used already. Getting a replica jersey signed is ok because replica jerseys are not collectible.

But if a player is willing to sign for X, odds are the market will have that same player's officially autographed card of normal rarity for less.

I'm going to have to try to remember to take a picture of my nephew's 'Semen Varlamov' Prospects card when I'm babysitting him tomorrow. Yes, you read that right.

It would come with a COA, if that changes anything...but basically you are saying don't bother unless I want to keep it as a personal item.

A COA helps a lot but I would get a more interesting item signed. There are tons of signed cards out there of this player.

I personally love Black Diamond, think they good looking, got some nice inserts and doesn't cost that much.

BD looks great.

For blaster boxes though, only UD base brand is any good because you can reasonably get Young Guns from the blasters. Only problem is this year because of the strike, there are no good YGs. Next year will be real good I think.

Cards these days have no soul. Gotta love the old cheap ones from the early 90s. Players were better too.

As a kid, I bought a lot of cards thinking that someday they would be worth something. Obviously they are worth about the paper they are printed on, so that failed.

Phil Housley - Flames

Pronger, Demitra, Turgeon - St Louis

Lecavalier - Tampa

Deadmarsh - Col, Pacific card

Sorry for the loooooooooooong post, but that's some of the cards I've got.

So I was just wondering if any of these are worth anything. Some of them are really good players, but they're ''only'' 13 years old. Exception for Lemieux ('93) and maybe 1-2 other cards.
Nothing of value there, MVP is a low end set, and you've got nothing but base and a few minor inserts.

For what is worth... My personal collection, probably almost no value, just personal. Back in the days, when there was no internet, it was good source of informations, stats, pictures and trivia.

I quit collecting cards after I went to high school.
