Why did we miss out on Ribeiro?

I was thinking on just how much we missed out on by not landing Ribeiro.

Remember Ribeiro was traded for a late 2nd round pick (54th, Mike Winther) and Cody Eakin (a 6.5B prospect on HFB). Not exactly a very steep cost.

How good is Ribeiro?

Ribeiro has been a top 10 playmaker since the lockout.

If you look at his assists totals from each year...

35, 41, 56, 56, 34 (injuries), 52, 45

Ribeiro has been fairly consistent over the last 6 years, and this season didn't show any signs of slowing down, expecting 2-3 more years of 40-50 assists from him isn't a stretch.

I chose to look at Ribeiros assist totals since 07. A five year window.

http://www.hockey-reference.com/play...der_by=assists

In the last five years the only players with more assists than Ribeiro...

H. Sedin 346 A
J. Thornton 305 A
R. Getzlaf 277 A
E. Malkin 267 A
N. Backstrom 266 A
P. Datsyuk 258 A

M. Ribeiro 243 A
S. Crosby 239 A
B. Richards 231 A
A. Kopitar 230 A
J. Spezza 219 A
E. Staal 210 A

Ribeiro is in pretty elite company when it comes to playmaking skills.

Ribeiro isn't a one trick pony either, he has game breaking skill and floats around 20 goals each season.

What could it have cost?

It would have had to have been equal to Mike Winther + Cody Eakin.

Both these are prospects a cut below the Kadri/Frattin/Colborne/Ashton group....

McKegg + Leivo would easily match or top that offer.

Two long term projects with question makrs around them.

What would it mean long term for our club?

More time for our young guys to develop in a smaller role first.

Put Kadri as a 2nd/3rd line winger with 1st unit PP time.
Put Frattin as a 2nd line winger with 2nd unit PP time.
Put Colborne as a 3rd line C, with the occasional PK and maybe some PP time.

Having Kadri/Frattin/Colborne to fill these roles, lets D'Amigo Biggs, Ashton, Ross develop in the AHL more comfortably.

What would our lines look like?

We would have a few options, one could be...

Lupul - Ribeiro - Kessel
JvR - Grabovski - Frattin
Kadri - Colborne - Kulemin
Steckle - McClement - Brown/Komarov

Sit/Trade: Connolly, Lombardi, MacArthur, Bozak, Rosehill

PP 1

Kadri - Grabovski - Kessel
Ribeiro - Phaneuf

PP 2

Lupul - JvR - Frattin
Liles - Gardiner

PK 1

McClement - Kulemin
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf

PK 2

Steckle - Colborne/Brown
Franson/Komisarek - Holzer

That looks like a much better line up through top to bottom.

32 yr old, elite playmaking C, barely any injury history, a lot of consistent, a lot of talent, small, cost 5 mill, and has 1 year left on his deal.

Would've loved to have him but I think he's not Burkes type of player. If he was I'm sure we would have him. There's no secret we need a number one center and goalie but again we're going into the season with none of those for now. Sad very sad.....

He does. He can can specify a 10-team no-trade list according to capgeek.

There aren't many "Burke-type" players on the Leafs unfortunately. =/

No room on this team for that diving pansy.

Cody Eakin is a good prospect. He played for team Canada at the world Jrs...I think a comparable Leafs prospect wouldve been Percy(value-wise), not Leivo. So maybe Percy+Mckegg. Maybe worth it, maybe not.

I've wanted Ribeiro for a long time. He's. Very underrated IMO.

I would be not surprised if the leafs were on his no trade list. Seemed like he just got eaten up by the media in MOntreal, can't blame him if he doesn't want to experience that type of pressure. I don think he is the center we are in need of. He would be above his level, playing 1C in Toronto. He was used as 1c in Dallas, according to player usage charts. and that led more complete Dallas squad to a non playoff season.

He will be a good fit in Washington, good stop and mentor for their young guy whose name is escaping me.
I don't think the fit is there for Toronto. Good number 2 guy, but not quite what he need for a number 1

Would have been the perfect mentor for Kadri. They play almost exact styles.

+1

Seems like he'll never live that 'writhing on the ice' incident down, haha. More recently, he was actually voted captain by his teammates for a game in the absence of Brenden Morrow and has become one of the better playmakers in the league.

I laugh when people still view him as a diver.

If I remember right, Burke turned down Ribeiro for Kaberle during that whole saga. He wanted Dallas to add in their 1st Rounder. I don't think Burke is really interested in him at all t-b-h. Goes against his "truculence" motto, but then again so do many players on the Leafs right now..

Talented but a weak player. He's tiny frame wise

I actually really like Ribeiro, and would've been very happy if we'd gone after him.

He plays pretty tough despite his size.

So did Didomenico...playing in the WJC's doesn't have much of a barring on what you'll be in the NHL.

As for Ribeiro, he wouldn't work here because he provides no size/toughness with his skill, and as skilled as he is, he's a liability defensively as well, and putting him with Kessel and Lupul would just be a whole lot of no in our own zone.

He would have been a good pick-up.

I'm not a huge fan, but he would far and away be the best center on the team, and would have provided the top line with a pretty big playmaking punch. At that cost, I would have been on board with getting him.

Its not about the cost but the fact he also had to give his permission to waive his no trade clause over here.

Didn't his NTC only specify 10 teams that he couldn't be traded to? Meaning he could freely be traded to 20 teams? How likely is it that he didn't want to come here bad enough to put us on his list of 10?

Either way, we have no idea what that list looked like.

Over his past 5 seasons, Ribeiro has averaged .91 PPG, which is 75 points over an 82 game schedule.

Pretty damn good.
