Week of October 8th-14th: Sunday Papers

Sunday, October 14th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

TSN: Falcons double up IceCaps in season opener. An unfortunate start to the 2012-13 season for the Jets AHL affiliate last night.

The Telegram: Back to basics for Klingberg. The Jets prospect needs to figure out how to maintain a consistency throughout the season. Of course if it was easy, all players would do it, but hopefully with the help of Caps coach Keith McCambridge, he will figure it out.

CBA news:

CBC: NHL labour talks may resume Tuesday. Heaven forbid they meet during the weekend. Guess they need the time off to not meet.

City News: Hockey fans protest NHL lockout outside ACC. Not a large turnout as fans try to find ways to get their message to the NHL.

WHA news:

Calgary Sun: Top 10 failed WHA franchises. Not every WHA team was a Winnipeg Jets. For every successful team there was a Denver Spurs or Miami Screaming Eagles.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. With the Blue loss and the Eskimos win, the distant hopes the Bombers had for the post season are done.

Monday Papers

Monday, October 8th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: IceCaps Crunched in OT. The loss capped a 3 game losing streak for the Caps during the exhibition season. Regular season gets underway on Saturday against the Springfield Falcons.

Edmonton Sun: Winnipeg tunes into Eurovision. Easy to remember those great European players of the past who wore a WHA Jets jersey.

NBC Sports: KHL coach says Evander Kane is out of shape. Not great news for Jets fans, although perhaps some play in Siberia will have Kane getting into Rocky-like shape for whenever the 2012 NHL season gets underway. He is still firing off plenty of shots at the net but just doesn’t have any points for Minsk. Perhaps it is the coach’s (Kari Heikkila) way to motivate him.

CBA news:

Toronto Star: Talks likely Wednesday in New York. Well both sides are entitled to take off today since it is Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus Day in the U.S. They have worked 'tirelessly' to this point and are well deserving of some much needed R & R. Please note the entire preceding sentence was laced with sarcasm.

National Post: The Stanley Cup doesn’t belong to the NHL. This position continues to be advanced but I’m not sure why as it will never, ever become reality.

New York Times: NHL replacement players would be illegal in two provinces. Since the players have no problems heading to Europe and Russia to take jobs away from other players, we guess in theory, they couldn’t get too upset about guys in North America taking their jobs.

Globe and Mail: Like him or loathe him, Bettman brings brains to bear. Shoalts with a detailed article on how and why Commissioner Bettman inspires loyalty or obedience in those he is surrounded by.

Globe and Mail: Lockout sympathy on NHL’s side…at least for now. Players or owners, which side are you on and why? We will have letters that IC received from fans in response to the lockout later today. We want to hear from you in the comments section.

NHL news:

Toronto Star: Markham’s power play – Arena promoter taking the biggest shot of his career. Not surprisingly, there are people on both sides of the issue who have very strong opinions about this arena deal.

Globe and Mail: Bauer aims to rebound from NHL lockout with lacrosse play. Looks like the #1 hockey equipment maker in the world is trying to skate by this lockout unscathed.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show replay:

Part 1: CBA Discussions, games cancelled, Fehr and Daly meet in Toronto. Joined in studio by Sean MacDonald, instructor at the University of Manitoba on labour negotiations and collective bargaining. nterview with Kevin Allen of USA Today. Krys Barch’s twitter rant.

Part 2: Interview with Michael Traikos of the National Post. Bobby Ryan speaks out against players going to Europe. Ezra Ginsburg introduces the CIRV stat. ESPN 3 to broadcast KHL games. The Nazem Kadri situation in Toronto. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. Blue look to play spoiler in Montreal.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, October 9th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: Be sure to check out the CIRV stat which was produced by our very own Ezra Ginsburg. The CIRV or “Comback Impact Ratio Value” is specifically what percentage of a player’s points occur when his team was behind.

Jets news:

The Telegram: Cuts made as 'Caps camp closes. There are still cuts to be made to get the roster down in size but with St. John's carrying a number of injured players, these are not expected to be made right away.

CBA news:

Detroit Free Press: Bad news for Winter Classic? NHL brass not visiting Ann Arbor. Not a good sign that the NHL has no further trips to Michigan planned.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Playing overseas no sure option for Penguins’ Crosby. Not sure many Euro teams are going to see the value in insuring a player like Crosby for that type of money. Regardless of his star power, that can only justify so much in expense.

Globe and Mail: Puck might not be in play during NHL labour talks, but egos are. Once again, Roy pens our ‘must read’ article of the day. Many owners, especially those in Canada, have become household names.

New York Daily News: NHL and NHLPA continue to disappoint, do not plan to address core economic issues. Fans will be disappointed with the pace, or lack thereof, of negotiations between the two sides. We will be unveiling the first part of a three part column today on Illegalcurve.com entitled ‘A Primer to the Tricks, Traps and Machinations of the 2012-13 NHL Hog Ride’ by Sean MacDonald who is an instructor at the University of Manitoba on labour negotiations and collective bargaining and will be contributing a regular column on Illegalcurve.com. Stay tuned.

Edmonton Journal: A virtual reality fix is better than no hockey at all. Fans in Canada are so desperate for hockey they are now simulating game play in Edmonton and reporting on it.

NHL news:

CBC: Goalie Dominik Hasek gives up hope for NHL return. The play which always stood out to me was during the 92′ Cup Finals when he played for the Hawks against the Mario Lemieux led Penguins. It was when Lemieux set up Kevin Stevens for a break-a-way but Hasek came barreling out of the net and slid along the ice almost to the blue line to block the puck.

Buffalo News: Sabres express interest in hosting Prospects Game, again. From the sounds of things the event went off quite successfully (although not free of controversy) so it makes sense for the Sabres to offer to host it.

Phoenix Business Journal: NHL, Glendale looking to kick Coyotes can forward another 30 days. Either he has the money or he doesn’t. It sure seems like this is just another ploy to keep the Yotes on life support.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. Huge Thanksgiving Day victory in Montreal yesterday. Blue showing a bit of a pulse as the season winds down.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, October 10th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: His heart will go on 'If I can help others... it's all worth it'. That is the sentiment expressed by former Winnipeg Jet Brett MacLean who at 23 years of age is being forced to give up on his hockey dreams after a frighting, life threatening incident on the ice.

Winnipeg Free Press: We made some NOISE. That experience last season was one of the most unique in sport. It isn’t every day that a city gets its team back and it truly put a unique spin on things last season. Most Manitobans and even the players themselves cannot wait to see what things will be like during the sophomore season back in the NHL.

Globe and Mail: Pro hockey’s success a feather in the IceCap. While the return of NHL hockey has been put on hold in Winnipeg, over in St. John’s they continue to embrace the return of AHL to their community. It has been a resounding success and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador are reveling in all aspects of hockey life.

Yahoo: Campaign Preview – Winnipeg Jets. While the NHL season might be on hold, the guys over at Puck Daddy are continuing their team-by-team analysis and today it is the Jets turn.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets trailblazers at News Café Thursday. For all the love that the Jets 2.0 receive in this city, nobody will forget the trailblazers from the Jets 1.0 who paved the way for this town to become the NHL city it has developed into.

Hockey’s Futures: Scheifele, Rundblad slide into unfamiliar territory in the Fall ranking. Bad news Jets fans, the number one pick for the Jets in 2011 has slid down the line in the Top 50 prospect rankings. Quite the fall from grace. Fair or foul?

NHL.com: New career in politics for former Jet Steen. With all the turmoil in city council, Steen might be rising on up to the Hawerchuk role in this city.

CBA news:

Winnipeg Free Press: We could be in for a long couple of sessions. The pessimism is abounding. From Bob McKenzie of TSN to the average fan on the street, the sentiment is that this lockout will be a long one.

Philadelphia Inquirer: Snider saves rinks; can he help save NHL season? Snider is one of Bettman’s top owners and has a high level of influence with the commish.

Globe and Mail: NHL ownership stance appears off-balance. It appears off-balance because that is exactly what it is. They are trying to having players solve problems that they themselves could fix if they stopped allowing ego to get in the way. Move a franchise that has shown an inability to generate a profit to an area that would instead begin to create revenue, and wow, an easy solution to some of the issues confronting owners.

Edmonton Sun: ALRB ruling due on NHLPA application. The board is expected to make their ruling today. Will impact the Flames and Oilers.

Toronto Star: NHLPA head meets with Star editorial board. Fehr offering to conduct negotiations on television if the NHL would agree. Not sure if Bettman & company would do so, but you can bet that TSN/CBC/Sportsnet would salivate to get an inside peak at the inner workings of these meetings. Similar to the way CNN covers politics, could you imagine the panels that would be assembled to gives fans in-depth analysis of every turn of phrase.

NHL news:

Kansas City Star: KC college hockey tournament trying to break ice with fans. They have a beautiful building in the Sprint Center but will the crowds show up?

CBC: Sheldon Kennedy wants Canada to adopt hardline approach. Education is important but Kennedy is right that the Justice system in this country could use some more teeth.

Toronto Star: Markham taxpayers should be heard in public-private arena deal. When you build a project of this size and are using public money, you absolutely need to give the community an opportunity to voice their opinion on the deal.

TSN: Red Wings’ PA announcer Lynch dies at age 95. A legend in Michigan passed away on Tuesday.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. Are the Blue thinking playoffs? Sure are.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, October 11th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: Illegalcurve.com is pleased to announce that Sean MacDonald, an Instructor in Labour Relations and Collective Bargaining at the Asper School of Business within the University of Manitoba will be providing fans with his insight during the lockout and beyond. His first column entitled ‘A Primer to the Tricks, Traps and Machinations of the 2012-13 NHL Hog Ride‘ is an excellent read and begins his 3 part series by looking at NHL bargaining tactics.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Bobby Hull still the main attraction. This is the guy who made wearing #9 for the Winnipeg Jets a thing to remember. From his million dollar signing to the many stories of his times in the WHA, Bobby Hull can still keep fans and media alike listening in rapt attention.

Winnipeg Sun: Locked-out Jokinen thinks NHL season is toast. Not good news for Jets fans.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets strive to stay battle-ready, but it's still a waiting game. Both Slater and Stuart are physically ready to go but unfortunately it doesn't appear that this is happening anytime soon.

Globe and Mail: Alexander Burmistrov still has a lot to prove. This is the perfect proving ground for the Jets young star.

CBA news:

TSN: NHL, NHLPA meet twice Wednesday – League encouraging proposal. Can only imagine what the next round of negotiations will look like!

Globe and Mail: Owners hold the hammer in NHL labour dispute. Going back to the very origins of the problem, Sean Gordon with an in-depth look at the current situation.

USA Today: NHL games officially start to be missed Thursday night. Tonight is the night that the NHL was supposed to start. Unfortunately for the NHL they are up against the NFL and Thursday Night football. Something tells me this, in addition to playoff MLB baseball, will more than make up for the missing NHL hockey for fans who want to be entertained.

New York Times: For NHL Owners, Lockout is a calculated risk. That is just it. The owners must be expecting one heck of a pay day if they are willing to put their recent success on hold and incur losses in order to “right the ship”.

Montreal Gazette: TV networks try to fill lockout void. Get ready to get your fill with classic game after classic game.

CBC: Don Cherry tweets a message to locked out NHL players. Cherry is 100% right in his tweet. The players are still under the mistaken impression that they can align themselves with fans via tweets. Best to let the public opinion form itself rather than try to manipulate the process in so transparent a fashion.

Alberta Labour Relations Board: NHL players application denied. In the decision it states “The vacillating positions of the NHL and the NHLPA in this dispute underscore that the question of which jurisdiction’s labour laws apply to this relationship is anything but “simple”. In our opinion, that issue, which has been left ambiguous by the parties for almost 50 years, is not best answered in the heat of a strike or lockout. We have determined that for the purposes of this application, we do not have to resolve the jurisdictional question because, even if the Board has jurisdiction to declare the lockout unlawful, it should not exercise its discretion to do so in these circumstances.”

NHL news:

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Bjugstad is true to the U. The Panthers organization will hopefully be lucky to be on the receiving end of this young prospects loyalty one day, but for now his focus is on NCAA hockey and the Gophers.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. Are the Blue making a mistake not declaring Elliot the starter?

Illegal Procedure: Season on the Brink - Poise. As Kramer on Seinfeld once said "if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times poise counts" and in Monday's game against the Alouettes, Joey Elliott showed a lot of poise.

Friday Papers

Friday, October 12th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show tomorrow from noon to 3 pm as the guys have 3 hours of hockey talk on TSN Radio 1290. Guests: Scott Burnside (ESPN). Norman O'Reilly (Professor of Sports Business at U of Ottawa).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Polar bears replace games. Fans in this city and many others across North America have no fear to let both sides know how they feel, although many will do so in a polite manner. It is a shame that the Jets are locked out as I suspect that Jets TV would love to be filming Slater doing his next “Take a Jet to work” segment in Churchill.

Winnipeg Sun: Players hold no hard feelings against Chipman. Seen as an owner the players can relate to, the Jets players bear no ill will towards their usual employer.

The Telegram: Playing with an edge. The rugged Cormier was finally able to get in most of last season as he stayed healthy for the 2011-12 season.

Winnipeg Sun: Hat tipping WHA Jets founder Hatskin. One of the reasons fans are able to enjoy the Jets 2.0 is thanks to the vision of an individual like Ben Hatskin.

Winnipeg Sun: No rush to honour Jets alumni. It is a tough predicament for True North. On one hand they understand that for many Jets fans in this city, the 15 year departure and absence of the Jets was like hitting a pause button. However on the other hand, how can you ignore the fact that the Jets 1.0 and Jets 2.0 are two different franchises?

CBA news:

Toronto Star: Nothing in this fight for the fans or the game. I suspect fans will flock back despite the bitterness they feel towards both sides. Despite being taken for granted, fans ultimately will want to be back in arenas cheering on their team as soon as the lockout ends.

Globe and Mail: NHL and players’ association talk again, but avoid core economic issues. People keep holding this secondary issues talk up as a victory. While it is important to discuss non-core issues and hopefully resolve them at the same time, the big ones are what is going to get this process moving.

Montreal Gazette: NHL exhibition game entertains – crowd sparse. Fans don’t want to watch a side-show. They want the real deal and shouldn’t have to settle for anything less.

Chicago Tribune: NHL killing itself with needless lockout. Worth reading for the ‘Wirtz-case scenario’ pun alone.

Toronto Sun: Today’s NHL players don’t know how good they have it says Leafs great. Players often talk about taking care of those players who are coming to the NHL, but you wonder why there is not more attention given to those who blazed the trails that today’s players benefit from.

USA Today: Did NHL’s interference force reporter’s job change? If he was a team employee than regardless of any editorial freedom he was granted, I cannot see how he would be able to publish NHL related content on the Kings site.

NHL news:

Columbus Dispatch: Pursuit of Davidson continues. The Blue Jackets are in desperate need of some solid upper management to get this franchise on track. The pursuit of Davidson has been ongoing for quite some time and it appears likely that J.D. will be heading to Ohio after his employment in Missouri.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. The Bombers prepare to battle the visiting Stampeders as they cling to the hope of the post season.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, October 13th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show today from noon to 3 pm as the guys have 3 hours of hockey talk on TSN Radio 1290. Guests: Scott Burnside (ESPN). Norman O'Reilly (Professor of Sports Business at U of Ottawa).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Scheifele chugging along. About the only good news from the lockout is that the young prospects are getting some more development time.

Winnipeg Free Press: Original words of wit & wisdom. Some pearls from the 5 Guys (not the new restaurant in the ‘Peg) who originally played for the Jets 1.0.

Winnipeg Sun: Rink sits empty instead of Jets home opener. Today should be the start of the 2012-13 NHL season for the Jets at the MTS Centre. Unfortunately the building will be silent to the True North chant during the anthem and fans are rightly upset with both sides about the lack of progress.

Winnipeg Sun: IceCaps want to take next step. The Caps had a terrific inaugural season on the East Coast, but their savvy fans are going to be expecting this team to take it to the next level.

Northern Colorado 5: Eagles Drop Season Opener. The Jets ECHL affiliate got off to a poor start, giving up 6 special team goals to an Alaska team boasting 3 NHL calibre players.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Both sides sticking to their play books as lockout drags on. After all the harm each side has done, they owe it to the fans to get it right, however that ends up looking.

ESPN: Players might stay in the KHL. We get it. You want to keep this as a leverage point.

TSN: Jeopardy! The NHL Labour Strife Edition. When you have one of the best in the business in Bob McKenzie shaking his head, it might be time for fans to hit their panic button.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: World Cup of Hockey being dusted off. Would you be excited to see players participating in a re-born World Cup?

Edmonton Journal: A look at five other arena deals and how they might relate to Edmonton’s proposed rink. The folks in the City of Champions will look at a number of other deals and figure out how it can be worked out in a similar fashion for Edmonton.

Buffalo News: French Connection enshrined. The most famous line in Sabres history receives some well deserved recognition from the city of Buffalo and the Sabres.

Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Gophers live up to the hype in opener. While the NHL might be away from your local rink, check out the latest NCAA has to offer.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. Today is Blue Bomber game day. Are you heading to the game?
