"Long Island" isn't incorporated. It's not a political entity.

If you are on the land mass that is called Long Island, you're on Long Island.

Quote:
Just because BK and Queens are physically on an island, it doesn't mean they're part of Long Island.
It does mean that. What you are saying is that they are not part of the suburban sprawl that is Nassau and Suffolk counties, and that is true.

But Long Island is the entirety of the island, and that means the four counties of Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

All four of those counties are part of Long Island, because they are on the island.

I think we can all agree that there's a geographical distinction which puts Brooklyn on Long Island and that it's entirely different from the cultural distinction which separates any borough from any suburb, no matter the location.

Having the 3 teams in the area so close by is a good thing. I'm very happy the Isles are remaining in the area.

Its like what baseball was from 1903-1958. Giants (rangers), Dodgers (Isles) and Yankees (Devils).

As a fan, it really doesn't change anything in my mind if the Isles are in LI or Brooklyn. Just like it didn't matter to me if the Devils were in East Rutherford or Newark.

It's a questionable business move, IMO. You can mention when the time when there was three NY baseball teams as a positive. And for the fans it probably was. But that didn't change the fact that two of those teams left town at a time when there was more disposable income and less options on what to spend it on.

I'd rather the Isles be in Brooklyn then in Kansas City. It would have hurt hockey in this area for them to move.

Only if this move makes them a more viable business than they have been. The proximity to NYC could be a double edged sword.

I just hope any Brooklyn fans who become Isles fans aren't as obnoxious as the Nets fans. I can't talk basketball with people here anymore because they're all brainwashed.

Hopefully the tickets are cheap. Would love to see Rangers-Isles in Brooklyn.

Lakers/Clippers kinda thing maybe.

Theyre still going to be the "other" NY team.

with just 14.5k available, not likely.

Brooklyn residents are an odd group.

Very anything-Brooklyn loyal group.

The Brooklyn Islanders will pack out.

mark my words they WILL petition to change the name BEFORE they move.

AND

The Russian and Ratner will purchase them...before they move in.

Here's the REAL wierd part.

While is it technically part of Long Island, it will never be CONSIDERED as part of Long Island.

You're right about that, but I really don't expect too many Brooklyn Rangers fans such as myself to switch allegiance, since I feel hockey fans in general are more a die-hard collective since it's a niche sport.

You're probably right about the tickets, though. Sadly.

As a Long Islander myself, I'm pretty insulted that so many people don't consider Brooklyn as part of the Island....Look at a map guys.

Why are some Ranger fans so insecure that they have to make statements like this? True or not, be happy that the Isles are here to stay and that the rivalry will remain like most of the Ranger fans here are

even weirder is that they say the name and team logo will remain the same ... you know the logo that doesn't include brooklyn/queens in the little map of long island it has on it.

Excellent, very happy for NYI. Glad to see them stay near MSG. Just worried if they miraculously do become a dynasty that the new generation of fans will be on their side. It's important for the Rangers to sustain success.

Brooklyn is smart with P.R. in general from what I can tell.

I'm sure the borough will be able to market the Isles well enough that by 2015 there will be solid, strong excitement when the team makes the move.

The team needs to be good in order for there to be continued interest. The building will be a novelty. Having a hockey team might pique some interest, but the team needs to be good for sustained success. Otherwise, it's the same Isles.

How is it insecure? Its the truth.

The Islanders are pretty commonly known as the other NY team. At least outside Long Island and NYC.
