I voted yes, but to expand on my thoughts, I think when he's been healthy he's lived up to the hype. When healthy, he's arguably the best player in hockey. The only thing that's hurt him (if you want to call it that) are the injuries which have caused him to miss out on a handful of more individual awards.

A perfect example of this is the year he had 32 goals and 66 points in only 41 games. More than likely you could add a Hart, Art Ross, Pearson, and Richard to his trophy case that year if he didn't get sidelined with a concussion. There was also his high ankle sprain that caused him to miss 19 games in 07-08 while he was in the race for another Art Ross.

So based on how he's actually played when he's in the line up, I believe he's lived up to the hype. Injuries are the only thing that's stopped his trophy case from living up to the hype.

I hope your not saying he is better than Lemieux, Jagr, Lidstrom, etc.

Yup.

Youngest captain to win a cup, scored the Olympic winning goal, and has won major hardware.

Depending on your point of view, you can make the case he hasn't been as good or as dominant as other players like Malkin, Ovechkin, or Stamkos. To say he hasn't lived up to the hype would just be false though.

Crosby detractors will always be able to find something to criticize him on, but fact is he's been a superstar in this league and very few players are close to both his talent level and list of accomplishments.

Oh I meant since that era. Poor wording on my part.

Imagine if he wasn't so injury prone. He'd probably have a handful of Art Ross trophies, Harts, Richards, and Pearsons/Lindsays (as he was leading the league in points and PPG almost every time he was injured). That's almost as many major awards as all of the last two years' HHOF inductees combined. And he just turned 25. I know there's so many folks out there who'll chime in with "he could have but he didn't" but... come on... that's amazing, in this day and age.

Hate Crosby. Felt for the guy this year because he really matured and seemed to have the world against him and he handled it with class and was still dominant. Hate him, a lot, but he is by far the best player in the world right now.

No he's not, he IS the best player in the league. I don't see how anyone can argue that he's not the best player

Yup. Haters can hate but Crosby is on a different tier in hockey. It's like what Federer WAS in tennis a while ago prior to Nadal coming in.

1000% yes he's lived up to his billing. If not for serious injury, who knows how much more accomplished he would be in his career right now. Might be talking about a guy who was the reigning Art Ross and Hart for 3-4 years in a row otherwise...

yes. obviously. every year he's been healthy he's scored over a hundred points and the 3 years he's missed a significant amount of time he was still awesome.

won a rocket, art ross, hart, Lester B. Pearson and Stanley Cup already and will probably add a couple more over the years.

If you're being objective, you realize you have to continually PROVE you're the best player by being on the ice performing. Until he reclaims his MVP and Scoring title, he's not proven he's at that level again. Proof is in the pudding.

Totally agree. The only other player you MIGHT be able to make an argument for MIGHT be Malkin and that's a stretch.

Hard to believe he is pretty much entering middle age for a pro hockeyt player and will be starting his 8th season in the NHL in a couple of months. Someone starting high school (Grade 9) his rookie season will be graduating university next spring... This makes me feel old.

The concussions have been a bummer but when healthy, unless you were expecting him to re-write the record book, I really don't think there is anything to be all that disappointed with.

I'm still not quite sure what point your trying to get across. Are your saying he's the best player since The Late 80s?

Easily. Anyone hailed as the next Gretzky doesn't have to get 200 points, just has to be very dominant, which Crosby has been for a long time.

I'd still say Ovechkins peak and prime was better. Cups are slightly overrated by HF in their significance to a players individual success.

But yes, Crosby lived up to the hype.

I seriously think that Crosby could be first player ever to win Hart, Art, Maurice, Pearson, Conn Smythe AND Selke.

Selke is not realistic at this point but given his ability to re-invent his game he really might have a chance to win it someday. That would mean a drop in his point totals, but thats no biggie.

But as for the poll question: Yes, of course.

I do agree he is the best but Malkin is very, very close. Malkin was on a complete different level than everyone in the NHL this year except possibly Stamkos.. Except for when Sid had 40 games and 70something points he's never been on a complete different tier than anyone else. I mean Malkin's 75 games 109 points to Stamko's 82 games 97 points was pretty impressive and dominant. Sid's rookie season was absolutely mind blowing come to think of it, but I think this year will be a deciding factor in who's the best. In conclusion, what I'm trying to say is if Malkin outperforms Crosby this year and they have a similar game count, I don't see how you can't call Malkin THE best. As of right now however, Crosby.

Edit: As to the question in this thread, of course.

Last time I checked Gretz played until '99. What I meant is he's the best since that era of great players who all played against each other at some point. Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Lidstrom (for a few years).

Im aware of when Gretzky retired. Your point was pretty confusing.
