No hockey leads to a wandering mind. Maybe I have been looking at Bettman all wrong. Maybe he is not an arrogant idiot, but a visionary. It is fairly obvious that he intends to cancel the season, even if the NHLPA offered a 75% paycut. Here is some food for thought (scant meal that it is). Maybe he thinks that by canceling a season, he could force 6-8 teams to fold. He has made such a stance about not contracting, yet at the same time ( sort of) aknowledged the issue when he said that there will be no more expansion.
Maybe he is making such a stink about not contracting, so that when teams fold, he can say how sad he is. Think about it. Hockey is going to need to be a better produce to lure fans back. What could be better than contracting 6-8 teams and instantly increasing the skill level on the ice?
Not that I really believe that......just some random thoughts.
I would love to see 6 teams contracted. Go back to 4 divisions of 6, increase the number of divisional games, bring back the divional play-offs, and re-ignite the old rivalries. However, it would be very difficult, as many of these teams are tied into very long leases for their buildings and their respective cities/states paid a lot of tax-payer dollars to build those arenas.
