This season is going to be a total madhouse. I wouldn't be surprised if any team were to make a run.

Except the Jackets.

Anyone else see datsyuk's sick shoot out goal? Wooooooooo can't wait

But yea, our defense is pretty brutal (strictly from a defensive perspective)

Sounds plausible.

Personally, between the lockout and the team on paper, I'm not terribly optimistic over the Wings chances though.

I think they have the potential to be one of the better teams in the regular season.

I also think they have the potential to be one of the worst teams in the regular season, especially if they have injury issues like recent years.

I don't like their defense as a playoff unit, so either way I don't like their chances for a Cup. But you never know - LA looked absolutely horrible for most of last year and then was completely untouchable in the playoffs.

Not a surprise but Eaves will likely be on LTIR to start the season...

Wonder if the rules will be the same for LTIR in the new deal.

I think they start with this current team and there will be "Brad Stuart"-like trade at the deadline.

Still that defensive stud is missing, but we can be enough good and offensive team without that guy to complete easily to the playoffs.

I'm not so sure. Some of those defensive options make me slightly ill to look at.

This. Could go either way, and I don't even care which. Things could go surprisingly well if someone like Cleary can chew food and climb/descend stairs again. But it wouldn't be that surprising to see this team struggle on both PP and PK, and ultimately suck. The most likely scenario is a 5-8 seed salvaged by the Datsyuk/Bertuzzi shootout combo. Yep, I think the shootout may be the difference for this teams playoffs chances.

I think they can get to the dance, and from then on its a crapshoot.

If jimmy can start strong, that is.

Pretty much this. Injuries, as with all sports, will play a role.

The shortened season could favor veteran teams, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a team like Dallas go on some hot streaks with Jagr and Whitney on the powerplay.

This is the first time I ever felt that we could miss the playoffs. Losing Lidstrom and Stuart is going to kill us on special teams.

Babcocks already said hes giong to be relying on some young guys this year with Nyquist, Smith and Tatar. There is no way Nyquist isnt in the top 6 to start the season, same with Smith in the top 4 on D.

However for junior aged players who would you call up from their junior team with any shot at making the team? Maybe you give Ouellet a look in camp in a regular season but with the year half way over already and his junior team looking at making a mem cup run you dont take him away from his team.

Stuart sucked last year, Ericcson is a much better PKer at this point.

With 25 roster players what are we guessing is going to happen. Looks like Eaves will be LTIR so that puts us at 24. Who will be that odd man out.

Nyquist Datsyuk Franzen
Filppula Zetterberg Brunner
Bertuzzi Helm Samuelsson
Cleary Abdelkader Tootoo
Mursak Miller Emmerton
Eaves

Kronwall Quincey
Smith White
Colaiacovo Ericsson
Kindl

Howard
Gustavsson

Do you think they may keep Nyquist down for another year. This will solve the log jam but would really suck.

How bout an offer sheet to either Del Zotto, Subban or Kulikov?

Pretty tough to speculate on. Detroit is fine this year, but next year they'll have $20 million dollars in cap and only have 15 players signed. Key RFAs and UFAs include: Howard, Filppula, White, Nyquist, Smith, and Mursak.

By current salary standards, Howard and Filppula would take up about half of that. So that's just $10 million to fill out the remaining spots with Smith and Nyquist to re-sign. Add in a marquee offer sheet like one of those defenders, and you'd have to make some tough choices on who to let go or trade.

It's possible, but it will take some shifting around.

New York is definitely in a tough spot with the cap coming up. They are probably the most vulnerable to lose a good player. As it stands, they would have only about $13 million in cap next season and they still need to re-sign: Del Zotto, Stepan, Hagelin, and McDonaugh. The year after that Gaborik, Lundqvist, and Callahan are all UFAs. So it's going to be decision time in New York soon.

No way Jimmy Howard is a 5 million dollar player. Neither is Flip.

In a world where David Jones got 4mil, Wideman and Carle 5mil, Leino and Connolly 4.5 mil, Flip definitely is 5 mil player. 4.5 at least if he repeats his 66 point season performane or even improves.

That's all you weened from that post? Splitting hairs? Okay, I'll play.

Jiri Hudler just got $4 million a year.
As did Cory Schneider, with 68 total NHL games. Of course a guy named Lehtonen with near the same stats as Howard just signed for $5.9 million a year. We'll ignore that though and give Howard the RFA contract.

Okay, so we get them for a bargain $4 million each. Keep in mind this would only be a $500K raise for Filppula, despite his increased production and ice time. But whatever, let's say his agent sucks. $2 million left over. You win, I guess.

I'd predict they both get around $4.5-$5

Lundqvist is probably taking similar salary. Stepan (3mil), Hagelin(), MDZ(2), McDonagh(3) are all getting raises.. estimations of amount of raise in parentheses. So that's 10 mil there and they're at 70mil then. Callahan is already making 4.275, he gets around the same or maybe up to 5 mil. Boyle and Girardi are also UFAs after 13-14 season.. It ill be tight that's for sure but we'll see how much the cap goes up. I think they would be looking to move MDZ or possibly Gaborik if it's really tight.

I'd rather pay Perry 7.5 M a year and let Flip go.
