Erik Karlsson and Jared Cowen. I can see how a lot would choose the Blues duo, though, because I feel like a lot of people don't watch the Sens.

Because the Blues are such a popular team to watch?

Pietrangelo-Shattenkirk

The Sens duo is close, but it really all depends on how much Cowen develops.

No but Shattenkirk put up 43 points and a +20 and Cowen only put up a 17 pts and a -4 so people who watch neither team are going to pick St. Louis pairing because of the stats.

It's generally accepted - true or not - that the difference between overall ability of Karlsson and Pietrangelo is negligible so that's what it boils down to.

The reality is Cowen is a shutdown defensive defenseman with offensive upside (unsure if he will live up to it) which basically get no credit from people who don't actually watch the games.

Shattenkirk is through and through offense which gets credit a lot easier than defensive play from ignorant fans.

the reason I would pick Shatts and Piets is, 1) I'm a Blues fan, and 2) Both Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk are sound two-way guys, so if one goes down with an injury, you still have another good two-way player. With Karlsson and Cowen, if you lose one with injury, you lose a big part of your team's offense or defense. But saying that, Cowen and Karlsson are a match made in heaven, it's kind of like a Weber-Suter deal, each one compliments the other and can help the other's weaknesses.

My arguement probably has a lot of holes because I introduced the injuries variable, but that's my reasoning.

You know its funny, this is very similiar to the argument Blues fans had in the old Pietrangelo vs. Karlsson poll earlier this year. Just gotta switch the names around

27 point difference between Karlsson and Pietrangelo vesus a 17 point difference between a rookie Cowen and sophmore Shattenkirk.

I'd say the difference is clear.

Numbers aside I notice when the argument benefits your side its valid but when it benefits our side its invalid.

I chose Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk, but it's not as if the other two are bad choices either.

I think Petro is the best of the 6 (by a slim margin) and of the "other guys" on each pairing, I think Shatty is the best right now.

Good question.

yeah Cowen and Karlsson are the only two that can/will play on the same pair, and they complement each other better than the other two pairs.

Exactly. But not to mention his giant sidekick is the absolute perfect match for his speedy offensive game that doesnt bring much physical presence. They could easily be the best pairing in the league as early as next year.

Lol, no he won't. Hahaha, I am an enormous OEL fan but his potential is 50-60 point solid 2 way defender. Karlsson's is 65-75+ solid 2 way defender as WELL. No one has the offensive potential Karlsson does among any of these defenders. Heck, I'm willing to bet a lot that none of the defenders in this poll, besides Karlsson, will ever reach 78 points. Karlsson's defensive development over the past 3 years has been absolutely staggering that it's not remotely out of the question he continues to develop it, especially with a defender who is actually good on D. He had to drag along 2 years of horrific Kuba defense then this year where he is average.

I love how people think OEL will be the best of the bunch when he is up against a 21 year old defender who is the youngest to win the Norris since ORR. Lmao, poor, severely, optimistic fans.

If Cowen goes down, I'm pretty sure Karlsson can continue his Norris developing play that he won this year with an average Kuba. Looooooooooool.

Petro and Shatty. Petro is the best d-man of the 6 and Shattenkirk also has an above average two-way game.
