Cam Barker

Is he going anywhere?

I've never paid attention to the guy in the past really, is he that bad?

I'm betting he gets a two-way contract.

You know you are bad when...

You can't make the Oilers top 6 defense

Was he "decent" during his 40 point season?

Probably is hoping to get a camp invitation from a team.
No one is going to sign him before preseason (if there is one)

I can't speak for his time in Chicago, but he was beyond bad in Minnesota and Edmonton. I didn't like the signing last summer, but at least it was a low risk move. He was worse than I could have imagined though. He is incapable of playing defence, and any semblence of offence has disappeared as well.
He should take a 2-way contract, and try to re-find his game in the AHL. Otherwise, he'll likely be off to Europe. I can't see a team giving him a roster spot next season.

I always thought he was gonna be a good/solid D when he played in Chicago/traded to Minni... He fell apart.

If you can't crack the Oilers top 6D..... well... he's that bad.

Please allow me to reiterate.

Cam Barker has all of the physical tools to be a top 10 defenseman in the league and none of the mental game. He's got no heart or drive and you can see it almost every shift, I think that's why you'll see alot of fans dumping on him, it's not that he's a horrible player, it's that he has the tools and doesn't use them.

False

His poor skating is major issue

Barker is a wreck at every facet of hockey except shooting puck.. But even then his shot has been terrible since he was traded

I have a feeling the Jets will invite him to their training camp and makes it as a number 6/7 D, or if he is back in the NHL, one of NYI, Montreal or Detroit picks him up, but if not those two things, he signs with a europe team or an AHL contract, then the team its affiliated with signs him just for a call up, then spends the rest of the year there.

The fact that he was picked 3rd overall really blows my mind then.

Yes but look at the stacked offensive team he was on. not to mention he has 28 points in 147 games since. Christ if you wanna go that route Jason Blake was decent at one point too

You might be a little bias here.

I feel your pain, as an Oiler fan.

Can you believe that Oiler fans were pleased when Tambellini signed him to a $2.5 million one-way contract last season?

Either the bar was set low, very low, for the GM or Oilers fans were deluded.

How did he put up so many points with Chicago. Was he playing with Campbell that season?

He was beyond "decent", he was actually approaching "good". He was shooting the puck well, taking pretty good angles and even occasionally throwing a body check.

I don't have the slightest clue what happened to him, he's been horrible ever since.

I think so. And powerplay time.

He's awful. He'll be off to Europe.

If he couldn't make it work on practically the worst team in the league, what chance does he have of making the NHL.

Barker was one of those players that never should have seen so much NHL time so soon. Developed a bunch of bad habits with his decision making and maybe his skating and never corrected some of his basic deficiencies because he was pushing so hard to compete at the NHL level when most of his game wasn't ready for it. All the talent needed to be a very good defensemen but never had the needed developmental time in my opinion. All the mistakes in his game were compounded over time as he never fixed them or was given the time to fix them.

He was hidden in Chicago for the most part so people mostly saw the offensive promise and the occassional big hit. Once everybody started passing him up in their overall game in Chicago, I think it really go to his head and he just fell apart. I wish I could pinpoint what happened.

I think he is one of those examples to look to when a player is brought up too soon. He can shoot and he can hit and he still has some nice tools. If he gets a lobotomy of sorts, I think he can still salvage an NHL career.

He's not much use to anybody right now, probably best that he plays in another league for a couple years.
