We must reap the benefits once again. We're in a division with GMs who've made a mockery of trades in the past and turned fleecing into an art form.

Our turn.
Kovy?

I wonder if any other GMs hold a similar interest in Matteau as Burke does.
At any rate, Matteau is looking like a more solid prospect all the time. Reading box scores and reading what others think of his play, it appears he's improving with every game.

Not to be a pessimist, but it's still only 8 games or so into his rookie season, let's see if he's consistent. It's hard to replicate his style night in and night out.

Unfortunately, Waddell is not around to be toyed with anymore.
Even if he was, the Kovy trade still pales in comparison to Toronto handing the Devils Niedermayer.

Anyway, if Matteau is piquing even a slight bit of interest right now. Good deal.
Either we end up with a solid pick or we get something in return for him.

I might be one of the few who have a good feeling about this pick.

People don't understand that the parts of the game that fantasy can't quantify usually lead to winning. As long as Matteau plays solid defense, plays physical on the forecheck, causes problems in front while being strong against the boards, he probably is a possession player unless he has hands of stone and no hockey sense. Just mimic Zubrus's game and you have yourself a player.

If Matteau listens to his coaches he will become one of the more valuable 2nd/3rd line players in the NHL that are downright nasty to play against. Maybe a David Backes type player.

When Lou and Conte started making the Zubrus comparisons and when it was let on that they were training together, I was thrilled. I love Zubrus' game and I'm hopeful we can retain that type of player even after he retires. Crossing my fingers that that player is Matteau.

Whatever. The fact that an NHL GM aside from our own holds an interest in Matteau speaks pretty loudly on it's own, not just box scores from 8 games. I'll be an optimist.
Besides, I said it looked like he was IMPROVING. I didn't make him out to be the next Crosby or anything.

If we get a Zubrus clone out of Matteau, I will be ok with that. If we develop him properly and get Zubrus with a better scoring touch, I'll be thrilled.

Good to se Coleman doing well. Hopefully he'll have a big year and put up a lot of points, definitely an interesting player. I've read that he's been put on one of the top lines so should have the opportunity to do well.

I'm excited by Matteau, but people should remember that most really good 2nd/3rd line NHL players were very good players in juniors. Rarely does a role player in juniors develop into a suitable role player in the NHL.

Matteau has a great physical package, but I'd like at least a PPG from him this year.

I said that and got attacked. Ill start off,

Lucic brah, and matteau adds grit with tons of PIM and only a +1 through a .800 winning clip.

So far he's hovering around a P/G pace. Obviously we need a larger sample size to be sure he can sustain that, but so far he's meeting expectations and there isn't much to criticise him for.

Brian Huddle, who is pretty knowledgeable of the OHL, posted on hockeybuzz the top 10 Devils prospects, in his view.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=47115

1. Merrill
2. Gelinas
3. Matteau
4. Urbom
5. Wedgewood
6. Boucher
7. Severson
8. Gavrus
9. Scarlett
10. Johnson

Some pretty interesting picks, plus he has NHL comparables for each as well.

Found a recent Swift Current game online, will make a short scouting report on Black and Scarlett later this weekend.

I'm getting really high on Coleman. I think he'll have the offense to be an excellent 3rd line, two-way guy for us who can still be a threat to score. I know he's not playing in the best of leagues right now, but he seems like he has more offensive tools than you might expect from a guy like him. And his work-ethic appears to be excellent.

I just realized today he is an overager. He is a year older than most sophomores, but he still has good numbers for a "junior" if you want to look at it that way.

I remember some scuttlebut after Coleman was drafted that he was a bit of a reach in the 3rd round, but I think at the rate he's developing, the team is going to have a pretty useful multi-purpose player in the near future. He's got such an array of tools that he could really be effective in a lot of roles.

A lot of NCAA guys don't necessarily make their programs at 18. A lot of guys will stay in the USHL an "extra" year or two and try to land a scholarship somewhere. John Madden turned 21 during his freshman year at Michigan for instance.

They didn't have a nameplate ready for his jersey at the draft. Usually a slight sign that they weren't sure they were going to get him. They had a nameplate ready for Boucher in the next round. In 2010, I remember seeing one of the staffers apply Wedgewood's nameplate to a blank jersey (Wedgewood wasn't in attendance).
