Quoting myself "best pick we could`ve made in the 2nd round".

And I was never against picking Matteau. If they passed on Severson, I would`ve probably hang myself. It`d be that stupid. So good for them for making the obvious choice and good for him for progressing as expected. We`re gonna need to add some forward depth so every additional developed NHL blueliner is a plus. Trades are going to be made, sooner or later. Can`t afford to keep them all. I hope we keep him though. There`s nothing not to like about him.

I think NJ did well in the '12 draft.

Jr and Severson were very good values
Black has potential
Gavrus has the talent to be a top 6 player, but could easily bust

I wasnt thrilled with the Bens though

Someone pointed out, but Henrique's offensive potential was just as much a question mark as Johnson's is. I know some people here hate the comparison, but their play is pretty similar. Johnson is a very good defensive player and very smart with a lot of hockey sense, just like Henrique was when he was drafted. Henrique kind of flew under the radar with the stacked Windsor team, so his offense was questioned because of that.

It's doubtful that Johnson becomes Henrique offensively, but the possibility is there. Johnson can definitely be a reliable, defensive 3C in the future, no doubt about that.

I think both have the potential to be productive Devils down the road.
More so with Johnson.

Let's remember many fans here on hfboards scoffed at the Henrique selection at the time too.

On Severson: How can one be compared to Weber by some, and Keith by others?

I know Weber as a big, physical, overpowering guy with a very heavy shot.

While Keith is a smaller, positioning, finesse player, smart player.

Almost complete opposites.

Or am I mistaken?

Because they all played for Kelowna.

Duncan Keith is not totally finesse, he has a good amount of physicality to him. Nevertheless, I think the thing is Severson seems to almost be a cross between the two. He's not as big or as physical as Weber but he's also not the finesse kind of player that Keith is. Some people may watch him and see the Keith-like parts of his game, while others see the Weber-like traits he has.

He's playing in Belarus but he hasn't dressed for a game since November 26 because he's with the WJC team.

Season stats:
15 games, 5 goals, 8 assists, +10, 0 PIM

It's a high-scoring league, but he still seems to be playing well.

Actually, that tournament started today.

Sunday's WJC D1 Activity:
Artur Gavrus - 1 goal (SH), 1 assist, +2, 2 PIM (cross-check), 10 shots, won 12 of 21 draws in Belarus's 2-0 win vs. Slovenia

Gavrus is the team captain.

I wonder if Belarus will make it to any broadcast games.

Good timing. Good for Gavrus, he could turn out to be something decent if he can stay healthy.

I hope to god they don't televise these games.

I think the winner of this tournament gets to play in the main U-20 draw in 2013 so no, we won't be seeing Belarus on TV this year.

I think you're right. As I understand his game, he is big, but more of a positional player than pure physical. He has a decent shot, but it's not the overpowering slapshot that Weber has. And he's definitely a smart player. Describing his style as a mix between the two is accurate. Now he just needs to get more experience and perfect that style, and we'll have a solid NHL defenceman on our hands.

gavrus with 2 assists today, had his hand on all 4 belarusian goals in the tourney so far (1+3)
u-20 head coach praised his leadership on and off-ice earlier

he's looking really good against men in belarusian open league, playing for powerhouse neman. he's 2-3rd line player there and shows some flashes of brilliance, received some man-of-the-match's honors also

He is only 18 right? So he will also be in the tournament next year so if Belarus potentially wins their division, then they get moved up?

Suprised he's the captain if he is 18, I wish he would've played in the WHL but he still has a good future. Especially if he follows the route someone said earlier going to the KHL next year, and Albany the year after.

I think you can say he's kind of like Suter or Tallinder. Those guys that are positionally solid defenders but they don't wow you in any part of their game while still bringing a good amount of offense.

yes, he is 1994 born and he is captain of this team

so yes, he'll be able to participate in next year tourney, and yes, if belarus wins it this year they'll be in top division next year

i think he has all chances to play in the khl or vhl next season, too bad that he was drafted by atlant (russian team) in khl draft, hope dinamo will trade for his rights eventually

WJC is in France (Amiens) so I can read a few game recaps.

1st game :
"... captain Artur Gavrus, who excel in one-on-one situations and with a great vision of the game..."
Team best player award.

2nd game :
"... not visible at the beginning of the game, he scores and proves he's the real leader of this team..."

I'll follow the rest of the tournament on "passionhockey.com", a french website with all game recaps (I'm a part-time writer on this for north-american games).
