Bouwmeester would be a great fit in Detroit. They need to find somebody to fill their #1 role. He may be able to rediscover his offense in Detroit's system but even if he doesn't he's still an elite shutdown defenseman.
Filppula have played with Hudler yes. Not sure if I really want to part with Filppula though. It would weaken our top 6 too much...
Is Bouwmeester great at PK-ing and overall defense. If he is a bit unproductive on the the offensive, that would be a big issue, we need some stalwart in our own end.
Bouw is terrific in his own end. He doesn't throw huge checks, but he plays the body strategically which makes him effective in his own end. He has a terrific outlet pass, and he skates extremely well - hence why he is paired up against other teams' top players. His defensive game has never been an issue.
It's his offensive game to people look at and cringe; however, it's been generally discussed that Sutter didn't use him properly - if anyone can use him properly and develop his offensive potential, it's obviously going to be the Red Wings. I'm even keen to see how Hartley will use him; I think Bouw will surprise alot of people this year.
Makes sense that the RW would want JBo but is Calgary still in denial about needing to do a rebuild? They need prospects back IMO, and Detroit isn't exactly flourishing in that department.
They've got a lot of good forward prospects I'm sure they could package. They could be good trading partners, depending on what Calgary is looking for.

Bouwmeester isn't really a shut down defenseman, he's able to play lots of minutes because he's a good skater, what he does with those minutes is another story. Let's just say he picked up an amazing team worst -21 last season.
Also note that the Flames would be laughed at if they were to ask for Filppula.
This. Holland is not parting with Filppula unless it is in a package for a top-line winger or a true #1 defenseman. He is our best winger and our brain trust feels he will continue to get better.
Is TSN starting to use stories from non credible sources? They had a video on their site talking about Semin signing with the Penguins according to a Russian newspaper and now they have this Wings-Flames rumor from a Flames blogger.
Shouldn't TSN have better sources that know when these rumors are legit?

Let's also remember he was paired with Chris Butler, who really isn't a top-pairing defenceman.

Then why would the Flames trade Bouwmeester?
We don't want crap. We don't want 33 year old Franzen, another left handed shot which we have a ton of in our top 6.
We're not talking about a 2nd + cap dump here. Some of you are out to lunch.
The Flames hold the cards here. If the Wings don't want to give up true value for Bouwmeester, then they won't get him, and they'll start the season without any true top pairing defenceman. And if these rumours are indeed true at all, more than one team is looking at Bouwmeester.

Yeah, Bouwmeester's defensive game isn't his problem; it's the offensive game he was expected to carry with him from Florida that hasn't exactly turned up after being traded three years ago. His defensive game is fine and he's always matched up against the opponents' top line. He defends the best forwards every night.
He brings a lot. He's used in all situations and eats a ton of minutes every night. Extremely fluid skater, which is a huge tool of his. ES, PP, PK, you name it, he's used there. If you want someone who can play shutdown minutes and eat a lot of them, then he's the guy you want. His offensive game needs some work but he's proven he can be better there before. Many believe Brent Sutter didn't use him properly and either a change of scenery (on another team) or under a new coach (Hartley) could do him well.

Again, another example of over-thinking the +/- stat. Bouwmeester was always on the ice. His +/- is going to be low on a team that struggled defensively last year. His partner is also Chris Butler; that also says something. +/- only says so much. It's a pretty stat but doesn't always reveal a player's true tendencies. It's a very hard-to-judge and misleading stat to follow.

Agreed 150%. Completely well said.
I find +/- a very misleading and unreliable statistic. There's so many things that happen on the ice, and this stat only captures a minor snapshot of what's actually happening. It usually doesn't tell the whole story.

Except that he isn't a #1 defenseman, nor is he an elite shutdown defenseman. Try again.
Why are so many red wing fans in denial about their team having large interest in bouwmeester. many people have reportedtheir interest do you really think they are all wrong?
If the Wings get Bouwmeester and miss the playoffs, does that mean the curse is confirmed?
I think so, yeah.

JayBo has only been + twice in he's career to date and the other one he was +1. Though one could make the case that he plays tough minutes and not on true cup contenders but still.

They ain't from very reliable sources and it seems that many of them are just quoting each others.
Should mention that I'm not of those who you're talking about.
