Bettman: Players locked out if there's no deal by sept. 15

Well that is just dandy...

National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters on Thursday that the NHL will lock out its players if there is no new collective bargaining agreement by the time the old agreement expires on Sept. 15.

"We reiterated to the union that the owners will not play another year under the current agreement," he told a scrum of reporters in New York after the latest talks.

"I re-confirmed something that the union has been told multiple times over the last nine to 12 months. Namely, that the time is getting short and the owners are not prepared to operate under this collective bargaining agreement for another season so we need to get to making a deal and doing it soon. And we believe there's ample time for the parties to get together and make a deal and that's what we're going to be working towards."

Reports indicate that NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, who just returned from a player information session overseas, is expected to make a counter-proposal on Tuesday. He mentioned earlier this summer that the players were willing to keep working past Sept. 15 as long as solid progress was being made in the negotiations.

The owners' July 13 proposal reportedly asked for a decrease of hockey-related revenue the players currently receive to 46 percent - down from 57 percent.

League revenues reached $3.3 billion last season.

If there is another lockout next month, it would be the third since Bettman arrived as NHL commissioner in 1993. The 1994-95 lockout shortened the season to a 48-game schedule and the 2004-05 lockout cancelled the entire campaign.

More to follow.

38 days left and there has still only been the initial NHL offer, no counter offer yet...

This counter offer is a crux in the negotiations, let's hope it's a good one

Agreed. If the counter offer is similar to the NHL's initial offer in the sense that it is way off base of what will actually happen in every area we are screwed I think. Hopefully neither side plays hardball and they are always willing to negotiate.

This was completely expected. nothing to be surprised about. Owners have no leverage if they allow them to play it out without threat of work stoppage.

If I recall when the 1st lockout in 94 ended, it was young teams with players who could play in the AHL who benefitted the most from the shortened season. I don't think starting in January, when AHL players get a full training camp and meaningful games, will actually help Tank Nation.

and we know for sure Tank Nation is dead if a full season is lost. Then it becomes "Lottery Nation".

I dont get why this process needs to take this long. obviously im not in on the negotiations, but why does it have to take the NHLPA over 2-3 weeks to make a counter proposal. I guess thats because the owners and actual hockey players dont really give a shiat if there is no hockey. They are already fully engulfed in it as it is. Us as fans only get the visual aspect of the game.

Then what are you doing here?

Rhetorical question, of course. We all know.

Any team can win the lottery anyway and our shot at MacKinnon is still very low (6% if it's the same as the Crosby Sweepstakes). I'd much rather watch some NHL hockey.

I'll be shocked if there is a full season lost, I think losing a month or two is more likely. If there needs to be a deal by September 15, then the best one can hope for is reaching a deal by the 11th hour, however at this point there are too many concessions the NHLPA needs to accomodate.

I expect a 50/50 split, no change to the ELC length, and a 7 year limit on contracts, and a small increase in revenue sharing.

Article says a counter-proposal will be sent on tuesday. Hope it's a good one!

Honestly, no way we lose another full season. Last CBA they had to implement a salary cap, this one here they're just ironing out the kinks. Hope it works out.

Unfortunately we've heard this tune for over two weeks now

First submission date was the 27th, then the 1st, then 7th, now its 13th. No wonder Bettman blew a gasket today and went public with a threat.

The NHL seems to be the one wanting to get this done, not the NHLPA.

Easy there buddy. I am merely saying that if there is a lockout, we will have a good chance at the consensus number 1. Not supporting tank nation, which is only possible if the season is played out.

I think because this CBA will be changing the revenue sharing and how the hockey related revenue is calculated. I think it was 74,000 pages of documents related to revenue last year were given to the NHLPA and they want to look it all over before giving their counter proposal. That's a whole lot of pages.

6% is hardly a good chance.
