It is hard to determine whether they are going through another funk or they are coming back down to earth.

When do they play the Astros again?

Oh goodie, Hughes time.

Pads will be in double-digits by the end of the inning.

What the **** is it with the Padres in this stadium? It'd be one thing if it was just the offense, but we're getting no hit by a journeyman #5 starter on top of it. What a disaster.

Well, the goal for this year was .500 and we should have all realized this was beyond realistic.

I'm afraid the Dodgers might put all playoff hopes out of its misery, if the ****pads didn't do it already.

I expected things to deflate eventually...just not at home against the ****ing Padres.

This season isn't over yet...but we're going to have to play near-perfect baseball to make the playoffs at this point. You can't give away games like we have this past week and expect to make the playoffs.

This is still a gigantic success of a season, regardless.

Agreed. Confidence is an amazing thing in sports. It equalizes talent in some cases. I think the team has lost a little of it since the All Star break.

They kind of went from "shock the world, nothing to lose" to watching the standings and realizing they had to win.

Oh yeah, and it's easy to tell from watching the players that this is what is going on. The bats are getting gripped harder, the pitches thrown a little harder, and things just generally being thought about too much. When you're winning in this sport, you're doing it because things are coming naturally.

This won't be the free-fall we saw last year, we're a more veteran team than we were last year and we're not completely banged up, but I don't see us being able to survive a see-saw battle between hot & cold for the next 8 weeks and still make it to the playoffs.

First base-runner...that's gotta be a base hit. Absolutely a hit, Snider breaks it up...c'mon guys, let's at least give this huge crowd something to cheer about.

We gotta a good chance to win tomorrow.

If we lose tomorrow against Ross Freakin' Ohlendorf, a craptastic pitcher, then I will be worried. I just don't see that happening.

in my opinion, if they lose tomorrow, i fully expect them to miss the playoffs. my focus would then turn on them winning 81 games. but let's be honest: if they lose tomorrow too, i'd be very concerned for them even winning 81 games this season. i know they're still 13 games over .500, but these are the teams you have to beat if you are competing for something other than 1st overall pick.

We need a Pirates version of this, complete with Jolly Roger:

Definitely the most epic Pens Photoshop I've ever seen.

Best.Photoshop.Ever.

Unfortunately my Photoshop skills end with the ability to re-size images of Annie Edison.

I can do enough to get the point across. I could never do a "cool" photoshop though.

my best work

I do have one Pirates shop from the Producers movie poster. I didn't know who either of those people were at the time (I still don't know who McClatchy is) but liked the pirates scamming people concept.

On a complete non-sequitor...I was playing around with birthdays on Baseball-Reference earlier and found that there's only been 60 players in history to play in the Majors with my birthday...which is all of 8 more players than appeared in a Pirates uniform last season.

Also, Rudy Owens has allowed 12 runs in 15 innings with Oklahoma City since the trade.

I honestly don't think that was on purpose

It's 3 games, and baseball is a 162 game season. Granted, it has been three very rough games, but the record hasn't even been that bad over this stretch of 2-3 weeks of mediocre baseball.

Today is Ross Ohlendorf vs Erik Bedard.

Also, for anyone interested who hasn't seen this stat yet, Travis Snider has almost double the hits since the trade deadline than Pence and Victorino combined.

A baseball analyst on MLB network (I can't remember which one), during the all star break, was asked about the Pirates, and if they are for real. He stated that he did believe they were legit, but mentioned that the real test he wanted to see was how they handled adversity. As everyone knows how that went last season.

His statement; "I want to see what happens after they lose 4 games in a row. And they will. It happens to every team. How they handle that stretch will be let you know if they are legit. If they fall apart, like they did last year, then obviously they won't be a part of the playoffs. But if they come out of a situation like that, and they put it behind them, and play well, then you will know they have a team capable of competing till the end."

I remembered those remarks, because at the time we were riding high and losing three in a row was unheard of. That is how good we were rolling. Now it is just a 3 gamer right now, but even if they lose today (which I don't believe they will) it isn't the end of the world. How they react to it after that, as the analyst mentioned, will be the litmus test.
