ideally, Hejduk plays on a scoring line, but unless he picks up his game a lot compared to where he left it last season I wouldn't put him ahead of the other RW on the team. In any event, since at least one winger injury is inevitable, he can be slotted in when it happens. resident bad contract #1 (aka Kobasew) sits in the press box, hopefully until traded. It seems intuitive to give Mitchell PK time since he appears to be the McClement replacement, but Mitchell barely PKed at all with NYR and I wouldn't trust him with more than tertiary duty unless he somehow proves to be miraculous at it.
on defense, I would give a roster spot to Gaunce and Elliott if they are looking good in camp (along with PK/PP ice time, respectively) but I doubt management will, especially with 7 veterans on the payroll, including Shane O'Brien, who is awful, and hopefully will wind up on another team before his contract ends. Zanon is such a big question mark because nobody is sure what he is and is not. I like to think he can be a stabilizing defensive presence on the top line that allows EJ to take offensive risks, but it is probably more likely he gets demoted to the bottom pairing quickly.
I would also make the starting goalie spot competitive, but, again, management won't.
