the decline of Greece

In 2004: 6 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze.

With one day to go in 2012: 0 gold, 0 silver and 2 bronze.

What the heck happened here?

They had a bit more money to spare on sports 8 years ago.

Host nation in 2004 which automatically means a huge inlux of cash in amateur sport. Today the country is on the verge of bankruptcy even with all the handouts from the EU and austerity measures. Little money for frivolous things such as these.

Their best athlete, Steven Stamkos. is a Canadian citizen who plays hockey...

EDIT: Just checked his profile. Apparently, he's Macedonian. Oh well, "Stamkos" just sounded Greek to me.

Still, it's a pretty steep drop-off. And it began back in 2008 when they won only 4 medals (2 silver, 2 bronze).

Yeah, Greece has bigger things to worry about now than funding athletes.

In 2004, Greece had 426 athletes competing in 33 sports.

In 2012, Greece had 103 athletes competing in 19 sports.

There's your answer.

How about Kenya? Only two gold medals this year and they failed to win the mens marathon in honor of the late Sammy Wanjiru.
