Three trades that turn Toronto into a legit eastern threat
I clearly stated you trade for Bouwmeester first, before you turn into a playoff team with the other trades.
Haha are you kidding? It's not that easy to fool an NHL GM, even Feaster. If the Leafs want Bouwmeester that means they would be trying to turn themselves into a contender, and thus that first rounder pick being offered instantly becomes less valuable as soon as you offer it. The Flames would need a prospect and don't need a younger goalie, so that's a no from them.
As mentioned by others Anaheim says no too. It's not that easy.
Maybe a different choice of words would be a little more appropriate. Toronto got Joffrey Lupul and Jake Gardiner for a guy the Ducks had ownership of until they left him unrestricted and free to test the FA waters. Is Toronto laughing at Anaheim? On a scale of 1-10, how awful was Anaheim in managing those assets?
And when is the last time Toronto finished ahead of Anaheim in the standings?
Uhm, so let me get this straight. The Leafs are going to build a contender, and then the Flames trade Bouw for their 1st, because it might be a lottery pick?
What?
Either they are a lottery team or they are a contender, make up your mind. Calgary says hell no to this.
Khabibulin is better than anything in net Toronto has. Horcoff would slot in nicely for Toronto as 3rd line center. I don't see Scrivens or Ross doing anything to make a difference. It wouldn't make Toronto better but it wouldn't make them worse either.
Bobby Ryan is 25 and has 4 straight 30 goal seasons. He's closer to Kessel's level than Lupul is to him. Remember Lupul in Anaheim? He couldn't find ice time behind Perry, Ryan, and Selanne on the wings already.
And Ryan would still get 2nd-line ice time in Toronto, because he wouldn't take the #1 RW spot from Kessel. It doesn't matter what Lupul was in Anaheim. They have already admitted they misused him.
On Toronto, Lupul is a PPG player, and a perfect compliment for Kessel. We gain no benefit by trading Lupul for Ryan. It actually makes us worse off because we trade a top LW for a top RW spot that is already filled. Not to mention that Lupul accomplished more last year than Ryan did in any year.
I don't care if Ryan is worth more than Lupul. It makes no sense to make that trade.
I'm not a Toronto fan, so no bias here. Just thought up a way to make TO a much better team next year without losing a ton of youth.
Trade 1:
Toronto 2013 first rounder + Reimer for Jay Boumeester + Calgary midgrade prospect. Make this deal first before other improvements, Calgary accepts as the pick could be lottery and they need a younger goalie.
Trade 2:
Jake Gardiner + Toronto 2013 2nd rounder + Calgary mid-grade prospect for Bobby Ryan. Gardiner's a stud, but with Boumeester incoming and Reilly in the wings he's expendable, and Ryan is a beast and still young.
Trade 3:
Lupul + Biggs for Luongo. Vancouver is in win now mode, this provides them with a playmaking winger to play with Kes and booth, and a nice prospect too.
Top 6
Kessel - JVR - Ryan
Kadri - Grabovski - Kulemin
Top 4 D
Bouwmeester - Phaneuf
Reilly - Komisarek
Goal
Luongo
Scrivens
So Toronto ends up trading Gardiner, Lupul, 2013 1st, 2013 2nd, Biggs and more, and somehow we still don't end up with a true #1C?
And Ryan would still get 2nd-line ice time in Toronto, because he wouldn't take the #1 RW spot from Kessel. It doesn't matter what Lupul was in Anaheim. They have already admitted they misused him.

Let's see Lupul have another good year before he's declared Joffrey "PPG" Lupul from now until the end of time. Lupul also played in the defense be darned Eastern Conference last year while Ryan played in the everyone drop to the goal line to block a shot Western Conference.
Leafs would look awfully silly if the 2013 first rounder became MacKinnon.
Let's be honest, no team with Luongo and Kessel is going to finish dead last. Those two guys and a half decent defense might be able to drag a team to the playoffs ala Canucks 2006-07.
And when is the last time Toronto finished ahead of Anaheim in the standings?
I don't know, don't care to look it up. I like the Ducks and root for them whenever they're in the playoffs. I was just pointing out that posters poor choice of words.
