Shawn Matthias

I saw his name in the Armchair GM section of Capgeek, and I thought, what would people pay to get him?

Do Florida fans want to part with him? What for?

His value, to the fans, varies who you ask.

Every year he has improved some aspect of his game, by a little or a Lot.

He might be our center that has wingers of Huberdeau and Mueller or he might be on the 4th line. He has shown some decent hands at times, and plays close to his size.
Needs to work on his face offs, and disappears from the scoresheet for some stretches.

I would like to see him in TC and preseason before we would possibly trade him, I'm still sort of high on him, but depending on how he does he is worth around a 3rd-4th pick or a long term prospect

Yup I think Tallon wants to see what he does this yr before moving him. It could also depend on how Casey Wellman does also. Plus, I think the org needs to see what they have on the farm thats ready to be in the NHL as well (Shore, Timmins, Wright, Pacan, etc). But I agree that he's probably worth somewhere between a 3rd & 4th right now. If he improves though this season, more likely makes him either unavailable or a lot more expensive.

I don't know all that much about him, but a lot of people seem interested in him. What's his game like?

Bottom six right now.

Has shown some nice stick work offensively for a guy of his size, but, not often.
Developing into a 2 way player, that is ok around the boards and in front of the net.
Has an ok shot, nothing amazing, but has shown flashes where he could be a 40 pt player.

Has good speed too for his frame, can/does play left wing as well, partly due to his below average face off skills.

Thanks. Seems like a decent throw in.

Tanev would be nice, but we have an abundance of defensemen right now.

With Kulikov, we have 8 defensemen on one way contracts.

Can't see the Panthers taking another defenseman in.

I have a feeling Luongo will end up in Florida for Matthias and a pick.

I'm a Matthias fan, and I think he would be a great fit in STL for the #3C spot. Given FLA's "abundance of defensemen", I was actually hoping for a trade like this:

STL gets:
Matthias
Ellerby

FLA gets:
D'Agostini
3rd rd pick

Wouldn't do it. Vancouver needs cheap dmen on ELC & Tanev has shown poise beyond his years. I see him being a Hamhuis clone.

WHat would it take to get Matthias and Keaton Ellerby to Philly?

Not much.

Both could be on the outside looking in depending on how TC goes.

We need top 6 players, but, these guys alone won't bring that in.

Wouldn't mind a package deal around Briere but I'm sure Philly would like to hold onto him for the playoffs(?)

Shawn Matthias is one of the hardest working players in the league but his skill is of a 3rd line AHLer. The guy plays with passion but hes just not good. I still like to root for him though.

His value is that he can be put on the wing or in the middle of your 3rd or 4th line and you know he won't be a liability. Can also do a bit of penalty killing.

Don't see why any other team would try to acquire just him, but he would be a good ad-in to a trade the panthers are trying to make for a top 6 forward.

i want to give him more time with the cats. he's got the speed, potential and work ethic to move up to maybe 2nd line in time.

Ouch... 3rd line AHLer?

From the times I've watched him play (watched him more last year due to interest in Garrison), he isn't good enough for the top 6, and isn't useful enough in the bottom 6 to be relied upon. If he was better on the dot, then his value would be much greater.

I also don't think he plays up to his size - not nearly. But on the plus side, his skating ability + size will keep him in the league for a while, even if it is strictly in a depth capacity.

Sure you are not talking about Jack Skille?

He needs ice time with offensive players, to see what he can really do until then well be discussing his "potential"

I saw him a ton last year and he has a few things going for him.

1) Hes really fast
2) He battles hard
3) He creates a lot of chances (no idea how many breakaways he had last year)

But his hands are well below average, he doesn't get enough minutes, and like Bleach Clean said, he plays like hes 5'9. I really do like the guy. Hes an underdog but I think if he tied it all together he might be able to get ~35-40pts.

Yeah I see it the same way. Wasn't there a point last year where some thought he would shake out of the roster, possibly waived or traded for scraps? I seem to recall that.

Anyways, when FLA gets stronger I can definitely see him bounce around the league for a bit. Kind of a journeyman 4th liner.

Mike Santorelli is who you are thinking of. Never heard anything about waiving Matthias.

Besides Matthias and Ellerby, we'll give you JH, and also the Bank Atlantic Center.
