Avs sign Mitchell Heard to ELC

Taken from twitter from the avs prospect board.

This does not mean he is guaranteed a spot at Lake Erie as he is eligible to head back down to Plymouth, but it does mean he has a really good shot at making the Monsters.

Excited to see him at camp. Hoping he has a good showing.

This just in: every single player from the 2012 draft has received ELCs!

Seriously tho, I am curious to see how he does at camp.

Still say he has a better chance at being the Avs 4th line center than most people seem to think.

I hope he makes it as our 4th line center this year but I doubt it.

I guess it's easier to scout an overager, so I'm optimistic about him being able to make the jump to professional hockey.

Better than saying we signed Filip Forsberg.

I don't think he'll be playing 4th line center with avs this year considering we just signed John Mitchell in the offseason to fill that role. I think he probably sticks in the AHL this season and takes over the 4th line center position the following season.

Unless they expect John Mitchell to play on the third line so we remain at the cap floor, and O'Reilly is allowed to walk.

Ok two things.

1: why would we allow ROR walk? He would be traded if that was the case.
2: why the hell would you even think of this?

Stewart and Mueller were signed late August and early september.

I think he has a chance to stick as that third line LW we are missing. He brings the defensive forward skill set and physicality we need.

Something like :

McGinn - Stastny - Jones

Landeskog - Duchene - Parenteau

Heard - O'Reilly - Downie

McLeod - Mitchell - Hejduk

His work ethic and defense first mentality would fit well with O'Reilly and there really couldn't be a better center for him to work with. But I don't think Landeskog & O'Reilly absolutely have to stay together like some people do. Especially if Heard can have a strong showing in camp.

We would then get another forward who can play on the PK and is good at face-offs. Pracey compared him to Simmonds and if we get anything close to that he will be a fan favorite very quickly.

I don't know why people think a guy who has bounced between the AHL and NHL the last two seasons is guaranteed a spot in the opening lineup. He'll have to prove himself just like Heard and a handfull of other guys will.

I would certainly not be surprised to see Heard make it on the 4th line out of camp. He can play wing as well.

I am also interested to see how he does in camp, either way, any combination of Heard, Mitchell & Olver as our extra forwards are an improvement over Porter & Yip.

Well he's the only 2nd rounder I can think of so far from this draft who's been signed.

Btw, was he also the only re-entry player to be taken in the 2nd round?

Detroit signed Frk, but that's the only other one I can think of.

The only other notable re-entry player I remember from the draft is what's his name that LA picked at #30. (Well kind of remember anyways.)

I can't help but get excited when our head scout compares Heard to Simmonds... If hes brings even close to what Simmonds does he will make the roster out of camp.

Even though Billington himself didn't specifically say it, he seems to imply Heard will not return to junior next year. There was a little doubt left since he was still junior eligible.

Quote:
He will turn pro as a 20-year-old this season, and Billington said he wouldn't be surprised if he made an immediate impact at the next level.
