He may be AHL eligible given the the NHL's agreement with the CHL expires. There may be some changes.
Also as mentioned before the rule is if a player is drafted from a CHL team. He was drafted from the USNDT. So that ifmthe agreement stays in place would make him eligible as well. Again the John Carlson exception basically, mwhere he joined Hershey when playing for the Knights before he hit 20.
Zubrus & Clarkson will be top 6 wings and Bernier will remain on the '4th line' with Carter and Gionta because the chemistry is too good to split up.
Which therefore leave Matteau to battle Tedenby and Butler for a 3rd line wing spot.
Tedenby and Butler are very similar in that they are offensive wingers, if coach Deboer wants a defensive presence on the line at wing then Matteau can easily make the team and fill the departed Ponikarovsky role.
Barch and Janssen are not in the mix as they are only on the team for spot duty to fill the energy/goon role against certain teams.
I have a sneaky feeling that Matteau makes the team given the current lack of options the team has to fill the 3rd line wings position.
I would be absolutely shocked if Matteau made the team out of camp. He has the physical frame needed to play in the NHL, but we want him to develop his scoring touch, and that isn't going to happen in the NHL.
I see him the same way as Zubrus. Zubrus was ruined as a scoring forward because the Flyers rushed him into the NHL. We don't want to make the same mistake with Matteau. Let him tear up the Q for a couple years before we bring him up.
