Jackets Choose a Leader

Wednesday, 9.12.2012 / 5:47 PM / News
By Blue Jackets Staff - Writer

Today, Blue Jackets Coach Todd Richards, and General Manager Randy (Drizz81) Ridgway, announced that veteran defenseman, Fedor Tyutin has been named captain. After last night’s acquisition of center Marc Savard, and defenseman Tomas Kaberle, the players met with the coach and gm at Nationwide Arena to discuss the season’s expectations. Among the topics was team captain, which Ridgway said would be determined by the players at their leisure. Before leaving a vote was held and Tyutin was chosen overwhelmingly as team captain.

Tyutin has turned into a serviceable top-4 defender with the Jackets, and is the only remaining player from that four player trade(Tyutin was traded with Christian Bäckman to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche on July 2, 2008.) to remain in the NHL. After being selected 40thoverall in 2001 by the New York Rangers, Tyutin would join the Rangers full-time in 2005-06, and has since gone on to play 558 NHL games, totaling 42 goals and 185 points in that time. Tyutin is regarded as a well-rounded defender that plays well in all three zones. “He makes a good first pass, has an underrated shot, and solid positioning in the defensive zone,” said Coach Richards. He is expected to see time on both the power play and penalty kill as well as be a solid contributor in the team’s top 4.
“It is a great honor to lead this team. We are destined for great things. It is a new and different group from years past, but these guys want to win. We will,” said a grateful Tyutin.
“Fedor is a great guy; he’s been around a while and knows what this game is about. There are a lot of young guys like myself on this team, and having him lead us along with Marc (Savard), Orpik, Hemsky, all these guys, will be huge. This will only lead to great things. I am excited,” said center Ryan Johansen.

Also present was Ryan Murray, who, along with the club, has decided to return to juniors this season. Murray’s presence was intriguing, not surprising. Richards and Ridgway invited the young defenseman to pick the brains of the veteran players, and meet some of the young players he will call teammates next season.
“Ryan being here was a no-brainer. Being around a Brooks Orpik or a Tomas Kaberle, even off the ice, will benefit his development. He will attend camp so getting to meet these guys will make camp easier for him,” said Richards.
Murray also had a vote in choosing the captain because “he is a part of this team.” When asked about the state of the roster, Ridgway said “it’s pretty much set, there isn’t much more to do aside from adding depth. (Defenseman Cory)Sarich(acquired this morning for a 3rd round pick) adds a veteran presence and a right handed shot on the blue line. Other than that we are pretty much set, I love what we have going on here. Todd and the guys are ready to get to work and I have full confidence we will be a top half team this year.”

NOTES:
• Marc Savard said he felt really good and is excited for the chance to build in Columbus.
• Former Jacket Espen Knutsen was in attendance. He currently coaches Vålerenga Ishockey club in Norway and has been named a European scout.
• Bruins Goaltender, Tim Thomas, is rumored to be returning to the NHL. When asked if he’d acquire the former Vezina winner, Ridgway said “I’d be stupid not to. It wouldn’t hurt to have him mentor Bob(Sergei Bobrovsky) and Bernier.
• Brooks Orpik, and Derrick Brassard were named Alternate Captians.
• Todd Richards said the starting goaltender job is open.

New ownership in Detroit is looking to do some revamping, and is very open to incoming trade discussion. Rumor has it that talks with Philadelphia have already begun.

That rumour is true and the wings are on the board with theie first trade.

NHL 13 should be up and running for everyone by the end of this weekend.

I will post the league in HERE - and give the search option in HERE.... not in the trade thread.

Anyone know if contracts can be extended during a season?

Also I'm looking for a veteran goaltender that can split time with Bernier?

If he's under contract this seaso for Boston and isn't retired he will be on Boston. If he's a free agent right now he will be.

My vote is to just let the trade stand an let Washington sign hin

So just being curious, how will trades work???Will we have to trade the players in the exact order they were traded lol?.Fir instance I traded for Wisniewski from Columbus, then I shipped him to Anaheim. So will we have to do all transactions in order lol?

That's my plan. I slightly regret doing this so early but I'm beyond happy with my team. That's why I have all my deals written down in order

I was hoping I'd just be able to get in there and make the moves, that's is one of the reasons I've been keeping track of it all... but if not then yes we will make the trades in order... which I don't think will take long.

Maybe I can set up the rosters to reflect all the changes prior to starting.... if that is the case it's a piece of cake.

If its like offline then yeah. Just create the roster and save it then if it lets u use a custom roster we are set.

We'd just have to trade our picks honestly.

I gotta say...I freakin love using Danny Briere on this game. He's almost automatic lol. He's super fast and actually a pretty good body checker. Briere on a line with Crosby is just down right dangerous. I expect Briere to net atleast 40 this year.On a side note,I am done trading any players.I am very satisfied with my team and am confident that Ben Lovejoy and Simon Despres will have solid seasons.
