I assumed Seto would slot in the first line wing like he has done in the past. If what you say is true, then that part of the trade is even more lopsided. Setoguchi did fine in his top 6 role when he was here and added physicality and speed on the forecheck. The problem was his inconsistency and his off-ice work ethic (which got him demoted and in the doghouse quite a few times), but those could be fixed as he matures.

You're forgetting that Montreal's powerplay was one of the worst in the league last season. 3 PP points in 38 games is pretty respectable relative to his teammates. He actually wasn't given a lot of Top-6 time either. He played mostly on the bottom 2 lines.
As for the "drive possession" point, it's hard to say. His Corsi On is respectable (~7), but then again, he played against other 3rd and 4th liners and he started 64% of his shifts in the offensive zone.

I think a lot of teams will be interested in Gomez for under a million. I certainly would trust him on the 4th line more than Bracken Kearns.

Tim Connolly was placed on waivers today. Don't know much about him other than that he'd be a good Top-6 fill-in when healthy, and that he's really injury prone. Last year on his contract, any interest if Toronto eats some salary?
If a team claims him off waivers, they're only subject to his pro-rated 4.75mm contract right?

I'd take him if the Leafs eat at least half (whats the rules on that now?). Havlat, Connely, AND burns? eesh...

Why claim him when you can sign him for a million after they buy him out.

A team could claim if off of waivers if they don't like their chances of signing him. I'm not advocating it, I'm just curious about the pro-rated rules. Pro-rated 4.75mm for one year isn't that big of a risk.

He's not eligible to be bought out. He only has one year left on his contract and apparently that was part of the deal. He can only be traded or claimed off of waivers.

So I noted in the Sharks thread that there were a bunch of players league-wide on waivers for assignment to the minors. I said there wasn't much of note, but the Panthers have waived C/W James Wright. I'd take a shot at him. He's got ok offensive pop for a checking forward. And yes, I'm biased because he's a former Vancouver Giant.

PollakOnSharks 4:35pm via Web Despite their injuries on blue line, do not expect to see #SJSharks sniffing around Wade Redden.

TSN's panel was saying earlier tonight that they think Larry Robinson might push the Sharks to put in an offer for Scott Gomez when he clears the waiver/buyout process.

For less than $1M I wouldn't mind a chance of depth in the 3rd/4th lines. If it doesn't work out it's a cheap gamble. Cheaper than Handzus.

Darren Dreger also pointed out that having played in New York and Montreal, a comparatively smaller market like San Jose might be appealing to him.

Posted in another thread that we should sign Gomez. Depth doesn't hurt and he'll be good on the 4th line, maybe even 3rd sometimes.

Yeah I'd like the Sharks to sign Gomez too, if anything you'd think he'd want to work hard to redeem his tarnished image. Would be a good depth move for our questionable bottom six depth.

The real reason to sign Gomez is because we haven't iced a player from Alaska in too long (Carle).

I think Gomez would be a great signing. Very similar to what Wellwood was for us IMO. Both players won't put a ton of pucks in the net but can hold onto the puck and help drive possession. He'd be a solid boost to the bottom-6 and would help fuel some secondary scoring.

I'd like to get Gomez for cheap.

Our bottom six wouldn't be too bad:

Sheppard - Gomez - Wingels
Galiardi - Desjardins - Burish

Wingels or Gomez could fill in on the top 6 if there's an injury.

They would just scratch Galiardi and play Handzus at wing.

Not too bad at all. There is bound to be 3 out of those 6 that come together to form a solid third line. 7 available to tinker with including Handzus.

Gomez-Handzus-Wingels
TJ-Desi-Burish

Our 4th line will be one of the best in the league ... apart from scoring goals. 3rd line still sucks. Also, I feel like one of CAR or ANA will get him.

Not sure how many teams are in on UFA Scott Gomez but Sharks have tendered an offer.

And here we go. I like it.
