Is this seriously up for debate?

Vokoun has been one of the best goalies in the league for about years. Pav is an inconsistent work in progress.

Over the last 10 years Vokoun has posted save percentages of:

0.918
0.919
0.920
0.919
0.926
0.925
0.922
0.916

All are superior to Pav's career high of 0,914.

Vokoun's career average save % is 0.917 .

Pav's career best save % is 2.73, Vokoun hasn't posted a number that bad since 1999-00

Obviously Vokoun is getting up there and he will probably slow, but he IS better than Pav.
Maybe I should elaborate.

I would take Pavelec because he has lots of potential and will most likely become better than Vokoun, however I admit I shouldn't let that fall into current in-game overalls based on previous years, that being said, Vokoun IS highly overrated in this game, he is not an 87 overall goalie, especially when they've supposedly changed the overalls to stretch out the differences.

Pavelec is incosistent, he is also playing in front of a defense that allows more than an average amount of shots per game, a lot of them being good scoring chances, so his stats are muddled by this, and a few REALLY bad games (again, due to inconsistency, which is a problem we all know). This was probably one of his best years (I say probably because I didn't watch the Thrashers, but he kept us in games we had no business being in).

The Jets allowed a very average amount of shots against. They allowed the 15th least / 16th most shots against. That is middle of the pack and a huge improvement from the previous year. Statistically the Jets improved defensively by every metric and Pavi performed worse.

Long term, Pavi has more upside. If he ever matches Vokoun's production, I will be very pleased. One game, right now... I would take Vokoun without thinking.

Really? I thought I read somewhere that the Jets were allowing an above average amount of shots on goal.

Not saying I don't believe you, just saying what I believe I read somewhere, but maybe I was just on something

But for one game, right now? I would still take Pavelec on the chance that he could show some of his upside, which he has done. Not saying it would definitely happen, but I'm a bit more of a risk taker, and would be willing to risk he also has one of his bad nights.

I have read that too, about shot totals, but it isn't true.

What is the upside with Pavi for one game? He is more likely to allow more goals and less likely to record a shutout.

I really hope Pavi can dominate this year and shut me up.

It's not the number shots that the Jets give up that is the problem, it's the quality of those shots that makes it tough on Pav.

If you can find a stat for scoring chances against, I'd be interested to see where the Jets ranks.

I don't want to get into it too much, but numbers people don't put much weight into "shot quality." It doesn't show up in numbers. That said, the people over at NHL Numbers has been doing all sorts of work on scoring chances. Their findings show a direct correlation between scoring chances and shots and scoring chances. Here is one of the pieces they put out:

http://nhlnumbers.com/2012/6/28/on-t...-must-continue

I also think people overrate the amount of breakdowns the Jets had. Thinking back at the season, how many do we think they really had?

How many free pizzas did Jones and Oduya give away? Maybe 8 each? Maybe...

How many times was Buff caught pinching? Maybe 10-15 times.

How many times do other teams do the same things?

Our breakdowns looked worse because Pavi very very very rarely made a stop.

yup. They looked bad, and often resulted in a goal, true, but the problem is people seem to think the number of these was vastly higher then for every other team in the league, and it wasn't

They were memorable lapses, not plentiful lapses.

People are welcome to argue "what they saw" but what the stat lines read is the jets had improved (close to average) defense and well below average goal-tending. You can make what rationalizations you want for that, but the simplest answer is usually the right one.

NOOOOO!

Honestly i'm only after a couple things:

Defence that is playable. They gave really cool "realistice' offense to playrs with the skill stick, but the d control lagged so far behind it's impossible to be useful.

AI that is not retarded. That's not a good use of the word, i know people with learning disabilities that would make considerably better decisions then the ai in previous games.

Skating that is not impossible- really hate the stop on a dime - direction-shift-at-full-speed ultimate cheese plays you can do in 12 and previous version.
