Early Predictions

We have a rough idea of what the team is going to look like to start the season, so what are your early predictions?

I expect the Bolts to win the Southeast Division, make a serious cup run, and of course, sweep the season series with the Panthers.

I think the goaltending save percentage will end up in the .910 area. The improved D will make this possible. By the end of the season Salo will have polished the rough edges off the younger guys. We have some very offensively talented players vying for the two open forward slots, but the winners of those positions should be the ones who are the most defensively mature imo to help solidify team D.

Team chemistry is something Yzerman keeps an eye on. By the end of training camp the guys will have discovered they mesh well and are willing to go to battle to help their brothers. They will start the season with a 5 game winning streak. Bring on the season.

Either a 7th or 8th seed, bounced in the first round. Or we just miss the playoffs and end up 9th. The team is improved, but I think it's going to take a season of Lindback being the #1 guy for him to really get rolling with it. And while our defense is much better, it doesn't scream Stanley Cup contender at me.

Bolts win the triple crown this year.

Maybe then NBC will pay them some respect.

We'll enter Winnie Lecavalneigh of the Tampa Hay Bridling. Marty can be the jockey. Or maybe MAB since he's basically useless on the ice.

FWIW, the SC winning team didnt have a defense that screamed SC contender either.

I think we make the playoffs with little issue IF, and with Salo on board its a BIG if, we stay relatively healthy this year and Lindback steps up and puts up at least a .905SV%.

Once there, anything can happen.

As for OP, you have some high hopes, which is fine, but a sweep of the Panthers? Good luck with that.

Cup Crazy, obviously.

Seriously, the health of Vinny, Malone, Hedman, Salo, MAB, (Ohlund), etc. will be of concern. On paper our defense looks improved but it's still far from a top-10 or even a top-15 defense. Goaltending is still a questionmark, IMO. And last but not least we need more secondary scoring and better special teams (especially our PP).

At this point, the other SE teams don't look much better than last season - except maybe for Carolina. With a little luck I don't see us missing the playoffs again. And from there everything is possible.

I don't believe in jinxes, so sure why not.

The team should certainly be better.

Forward group this year is probably about equal to what it was to start last year. Purcell improved and we added Brown/Pouliot, but we also lost Moore/Downie and Marty showed his age a bit. There is a pretty big ? at the 3rd line center position to start the season. If the kids (Connolly/Conacher/Killorn) step up, we could be looking at a very good offensive unit.

Defense is absolutely improved. Hedman got another year of learning under his belt, Brewer = Brewer, Salo > Kubina, Carle > Clark, Lee > Gilroy, Mikkelson > Gervais, Aulie > Oberg, MAB = MAB, Ohlund = Ohlund.

Goaltending can't get any worse than last year, right? Garon was looking adequate before his injury. I'd expect Lindback to post about a .910sv%, which is miles ahead of what we got last yr.

Boucher got another year of NHL experience, I'm sure he has plans on how to improve over last yr (powerplay).

Injuries will be important, as always. Even just one of Vinny or Malone putting in a full season would be huge. Hedman staying concussion free would be nice. Salo is Salo, he's bound to wind up running out of bad luck at some point though right?. If from some miracle Ohlund winds up being able to play, that would give us a pretty deep defensive group.

I'd guess the team will be in contention to win the division. Making the playoffs should be expected.

Stamkos gets 50+ goals and breaks 100 points.

Our GAA should go down with the improved D and goaltending. Our GFA should actually go up we have a better bottom 6 who are capable of having 3 15+ goal scorers. I think the team will go as far as Vinny takes them, I expect a bounce back injury free season where he's a PPG player again. If he can be the player he was and Stamkos continues his pace I think we'll be a lethal team. I see playoffs for sure and once your in you never know what can happen.

I think if they stay healthy and play as hard as they did at the end of the season for most of the season they will be a playoff team. Improved defense. Added a little scoring in Pouliot and Brown. Connolly should be better this year with a full offseason to train and learn from his rookie season. Lindback cant be worse than what we had. He sounds like he can play the part. I think if he turns out good we will definitely make the playoffs. Once your there anything can happen of course

We have so many goaltenders now one should emerge but it better be Lindback this year. We should win the SE anyway.

I think he could make another couple of moves if the right deals come a long. This team isnt far off from being a legit contender. They may just wait until the deadline to do them though.

Echoing others here we should be a weaker playoff team

What are your Stamkos/Marty/Vinny (maybe Teddy?) predictions? Scaling back from my over optimistic predictions last year (prolly being pessimistic here):

Stamkos: 50g 35a
St Louis: 20g 50a
Lecavalier: 25g 30a
Purcell: 20g 30a

Just like the panthers last year, we will win the division but be a low 6-7 east finish. May surprise a team in the first round but it will be a short playoffs.
They will come back next year and take it all.
So it is more like the season 10 years ago more than the panthers last season.

Stammer and Teddy are put on a line with Connolly and we see Connolly have a break-out season. We see Marty and Vinny re-united with Brown being the other winger. 3rd Line will be a big line with scoring potential, Malone, Killorn and Pouliot. 4th line we will see a mix of Thompson, Hall, Tyrell, Pyatt, Wyman. I also believe Johnson and Conachor will be called up at some stage in the season..

Our top 4 dmen are pretty much set in stone. The 3rd line is intriguing though. I think Lee is going to be playing as the 5th dman but I can see him moving into the 4th spot during the season, Im a big fan of his and I think he has great potential. I think we trade MAB at the deadline for a 2nd, to a team that needs a pp specialist heading into the playoffs. Its Mikkelsons do or die year, so I think that hes going to improve and be a solid 6th guy. Auile is going to be thrown in and out of Tampa and also look for Barbierio and Gudas to see some NHL time. I think its unlikely Gudas and Barbiero can win a roster spot out of camp, I think they need 1 more year and then they will be ready to make the leap.

Goaltending I see Lindback starting 50-55 games. I see Garon playing an important role in taking some of the workload off Anders as he grows into an NHL starter. Look for Helenius and Tokarski to have stand-out AHL seasons.

This is just my opinion, please let me know what you agree/disagree with :-)

Vinny 37 38
Purcell 31 42
Hedman 9 37
Carle 6 36
Connolly 16 24
Brown 15 21

The only prediction i'm capable of giving at the moment is that a hockey season will start on time. I hope.

I was just looking at my dvd of the 04 Lightning Stanley Cup Team and looking at the players we had, I still can't believe we won the cup with that roster. With that being said....anything is possible!

We had a a goalie playing amazingly. That makes up for Pratt/Lucekwich (sp)/Sarich etc. playing in front of him.

Look at the Canes/Ward Kings/Quick.

Kings had a very good roster... their problem was they couldn't score goals... as soon as they started to score... they were destroying everyone...

Maybe its wishful thinking but I think Stammer breaks the 100 point barrier and nets his third Maurice Rocket Richard award. Vinny, MSL, Purcell mantain their current level. Connolly breaks out (50 points). Hedman becomes a #1 Dman (although techbically he already is but you know what I mean) and we manage to obtain decent goaltending from Lindback/Garon and stay healthy helping us winning the division.

They got hot at the right time. Quick was downright unreal.

Its not always about being the best team, its about being the best team at the right time. Washington and Vancouver are notorious at this point for not really being able to find that extra gear, same with San Jose.

Obvious predictions. Increased PP %, lower GAA, increased puck possession time, and lower shots against. More bold predictions. Stamkos increases goal totals, VL nets at least 30 goals, and Lee surprises with 30+ points and 20 minutes of ice time a night.
