Erik Karlsson in a 1-for-1 trade scenario

Obviously, as a Sens fan, Erik is the last guy I'd trade (I'd even trade Spezza before him). But just wondering, what player you would rate as even value for Karlsson in a 1 for 1 trade scenario (i.e. Karlsson for one player, no picks, prospects, or other players added to either side). Contract situation can play into it as well.

Fire away!

Shea Weber(better but older)
Alex Ovechkin(only because his value is low, I wouldn't actually pull the trigger on that)
John Tavares

That's about the same value, I think.

A 1 to 1 with a team that has an abundance of young equal talented forwards and need D. Oilers?

Of course, the Sens would need an equal replacement before considering this.

Thanks for the feedback, quite enlightening.

I'd rather have Karlsson than any of the big 4, easily.

I think of the Oilers big 4 either Hall or Eberle would be good value (I think they might have to add but you said 1-1) I also think Giroux has just slightly higher value so a deal around both would be good as well.

I know in advance that my fanbase will destroy me for this, but well the last guy we trade in Philly would be Claude Giroux, so there it is from the Flyers.

Claude Giroux for Erik Karlsson.

Karlsson won the Norris and outscored Hopkins as a D last season...

Hopkins does not have the same trade value.

That's about the same value, I think.
NYI would not even be tempted imo.

And that's not a knock on Karlsson. It's an indication of how they love having Tavares, as the face of the franchise and the kid they are building around.

Toews/Kopitar/E. Staal/Doughty are in the ballpark in league-wide trade value. But the idea of a straight up deal in any of the above would have a good chance of being denied by both sides.

and ottawa wouldnt be tempted either.

but in terms of value, i think that's the type of 1-1 value we're looking at.

below Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos

around Giroux, Tavares, Ovechkin, Doughty, Toews, Kane, Price, WSH Backstrom

above Kopitar, J. Staal, Seguin, Pietrangelo, PK Subban,

I don't think the Oilers top guns have that value yet. At the same time I don't think Karlsson has the same value as Weber because as good as his last year was it was still only one year. I'd say Tavares is a great comparison in terms of pure value but obviously as someone else said NYI would prefer Tavares as the face of the franchise. Since Giroux was also mentioned I'll weigh in on that one as well - I'd take Giroux over Karlsson easily.

From the Jets, there's no one of the same value as Karlsson.

Your argument is invalid; you're comparing a rookie to a guy 2-3 years older. Yeah, sure.

I'm thinking something like Quick or Toews. (Toews won't be traded, but someone like him. Neither will Quick, but this is figurative anyway)

Their rookie years are comparable actually. Edge to Karlsson for tremendous playoffs.

I am, and rookies rarely have the same value as established award winning NHL players.

None of the players I mentioned would consider trading them. I was just listing players I feel have equivalent value.

I'll go on record and say that, value wise, it's not that far off. I obviously think Giroux to be the better player right now, you could say I'm a little biased, but the difference between them is not huge.

The problem is one for one. You're giving up a young top pairing defensemen for a young top line center and whichever one you're getting, it leaves you with a GAPING hole at the other.

Because this is HFBoards, here is what will happen: both fanbases will argue until they are blue in the face over which one has more value. Undervaluations will be made by both sides, at first out of ignorance and then out of spite.

In closing, although value is not that far off, I don't think either team would do this.

I know that Claude has ties to Ottawa, so they'd probably be better off waiting for him to hit free agency and offering him a contract then.

Similarly, the Flyers would be better off trying for Karlsson when he becomes an UFA.

I agree 100%. Giroux has slightly more value than Karlsson, while Tavares is probably about the same.

Agreed, as a fan of neither team i'd take Tavares over Karlsson anyday. Not just because we need a 1c either
