Not That We are Going to Sign Him, but I Have a Theory

There was supposedly mutual interest between Shane Doan and the Blackhawks in July. Obviously, he hasn't sign here. However, he hasn't signed anywhere.

Did our interest fade? I'm not sure.

My theory is that with the full season potentially being in jeopardy, nobody is willing to give Doan a four-year deal. If Doan got a four-year deal and there was a 2012-13 season in some fashion, the contract would end when he is 39 years old. However, if there is a lockout that cancels one full season and you have him signed for four years, you will then be stuck with him until he's 40.

If there is at least some sort of a season this year, I bet you see Doan get signed. Will we make a push? I could see us doing so and definitely failing.

And you may say, "Well, then how did Jagr and Whitney got signed. Whitney even got a two-year deal, and he is already 40". Well, I believe that there was a little less concern than there is now before about the whole year getting locked out. Doan waiting to see about the Phoenix situation may not get him the contract he wants. General managers, including ours, who supposedly still has/had interest, didn't give in.

We are not getting Doan. We have not been mentioned in discussions about him for a while now.

He got offered 7.5 mill. I don't want to go anywhere NEAR that.

I'm mad we let Olli Jokinen go more than anything.

But I'm passing on Doan.

Seems like the FA market is on hold until after the CBA is done.

That's the point.

I'm suggesting that not only is the contract term/length ridiculous, but it could be even more ridiculous if it doesn't kick in for another year. Bowman probably backed off for that reason if Doan was considering us. Of course we aren't getting Doan.

Right.

He potentially cost himself more length in the contract by trying to let the Phoenix situation play out.

I dont think you're going to see that much difference of opinion between what people felt in the "Doan" thread. If we can sign him on a 1-2 year deal for under $5 then sure. Lets do it. But since that's pretty unrealistic i wont get my hopes up.

Semin is still out there too, right? Seemed like everything just stopped. Lou hasn't been moved.

I don't see a reason to start this thread other than being in the dog days now... I miss hockey

Still don't think Doan makes much sense for us with this demands

There was supposedly mutual interest between Doan and every team in the NHL, according to his agent (or, at least, seemed like it).

If Doan is willing to sign a semi-reasonable deal than Chicago, like many teams, would have interest. If we're talking about 5M (or more) over 3-4 years than no, the Hawks won't.

Doan's agent says there is mutual interest between Doan and the Chicago Enforcers.

That is a reasonable deal. I can't believe you define reasonable as what....4M over 2 years? What, was he born on Madison St. or something, lol.

From reports, it certainly doesn't look that we have a chance for Doan, but you can't believe everything you hear. In this case, there's no way I can see Doan getting close to the $ 7M price tag (that came months ago from a single unsubstantiated source) unless it's for a 1 year term. Doan himsef was quoted, and on video, as looking for a "a long term deal". I'd say 3, possibly 4 years at around $ 5.5M is what Doan's contract will look like.

That said, a 3 year deal for that amount is not outrageous by any means and I still hold some hope that Stan hasn't given up trying to get him ... or a goalie and/or a defensive dman.

The point of the thread is that Doan will no longer get a four-year deal if we are locked out for the year.

Bowman could then try to go after him and fail, of course.

Well, even if your assertion is accurate and he's forced to knock down to a three or two year deal, I don't think it'd be smart to go after him unless he also knocks down his asking price per year.
