The Defence is far from 'sucks'.

Look at what teams with worse D than the Leafs(on paper) have shown in the past, it is system before personnel. Teams like New Jersey last year are a prime example of that.

Are we pinning our hopes on "addition by subtraction"? Exelby is long gone so now we start to win?

The D is of equal importance to our team as a 1C and a number 1 goalie (just to compete in the East).

Looks like we have Paul Ranger in the mix now.

Mark Fraser is a tough, defensive defenceman and he has NHL experience. He stopped playing in the NHL because of injuries not lack of talent. He isn't as skilled as some other defensive defencemen but he is equally as tough, if not tougher and has lots of size. He fits the bill for what we are looking to acquire and we don't even have to leave our own backyard to get him.

wasn't his negative point his skating though?

He's an interesting option though for sure.

Word is, he's working hard with Barb, and he's quite impressed with her.

i'm all for it. i'm totally cheering him on to make the leap. the team could use his toughness. i could see him backing up Marlies in the games i watched. it would be great if he could back up the Buds.

as for now i'm with most people's assessment: a long shot.

i hope he overcomes that.

I actually might agree with taking the inside route anyways. Next year Rielly will almost surely make the team(if not sooner) making there one less spot.

Phaneuf-Rielly
Gardiner-Gunnar

We now just got Paul Ranger, we have Holzer coming up probably and Mark Fraser. Ranger is a mystery but if he rebounds well he could be a good addition. Holzer could be a solid stay at home d-man for us and same with Fraser.

I think our Defense is ALMOST at a high-level it needs to be. It's missing one or two pieces. Right now i'd give it a 7/10 but add in Rielly and another stay at home d-man in a year and it's a 9/10 for me. It has alot of mobility it just needs some toughness.

I'm more excited about '13-'14, but here it goes:

Gunnar-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Komi
Liles-Holzer

In case of injury:
Blacker/Ranger-Fraser

AFAIK not wingers but a center and a stop gap blueliner who could replace some of JayBows duties.

So maybe Gunnar, Bozak/Conolly/Lombardi and some pick?

Not sure if calgary would be interested in one of your centers though.

Detroit was rumored to offer Filppula, Ericsson and a pick.

Perhaps Colborne and Blacker?
There's plenty of variations I'd be comfortable with.

Komi needs a solid D to play with that can move the puck.
Gardiner needs a solid D with him. He's weak defensively and his man seems to get to the puck too often.
Not really paying too much attention to Right/Left. What do you think of.

Phaneuf-Gunnar/Liles/Holzer
Gardiner-Gunnar/Liles/Holzer
Franson-Komi
Blacker?

I hope Gunnar is on our 2nd pairing, because we have a better team and can move him down.

If Franson is signed, he should get in the line-up.

I'm guessing there is something else going on.

I think Franson gets sign-and-traded after the CBA is finalized.

His one way contract is a huge vote of confidence for him.

You do not get the last laugh, because Holzer still wont be on the 2nd pairing this year.

He'll be a great addition to the 3rd pairing though. We need a stay at home d-man presence like him.

But for this year we need one more guy too on the 2nd pairing. Rielly will bump gunnar within 2 years on top 4.

I still believe Gunnar should be exiled.

Phaneuf - Komi
Liles - Gardiner
Franson - Holzer
