Smid. He's developing into the reliable stay at home defenceman with many years ahead of him.
Gill definitely has a boatload of experience and I would probably have a lot of confidence putting him out there in important situations in the playoffs. (Hope to say that about Smid soon)

Reason: Missed something
Gill is the more known name of the two because of where he has played but he is out of his prime and slow. Smid is better, and you can't really argue it.
Smid. Plays a physical style and is looking to be a good shut-down defenseman. Gill has experience, but at this point, I don't even see how this is debatable.
Gill is a two way force, a big body that crushes and destroys the opposition. I'll never forget how dominant he was when he lead the Penguins to the Cup as their #1 and nearly took the hapless Montreal Canadiens all the way just one year later.
Smid easily. Smid like Gill is a "stay at home defenseman" but Gill has zero offensive skills (deking, shooting and passing) but is reliable in his own zone and blocks shots on the PK very well. Gill for his size is also not that physical but he still is great on the PK. Smid is younger and is by no means the most gifted player offensively but he is a few steps ahead of Gill and is a very good dman in his own zone. Gill is slow as hell also
Smid is younger, faster and more versatile. Gill is someone who is great at what he does, I would love to have him on my team and I'm sure many would agree. If I had to pick one it's smid no question but that isn't a slight on gill.
