Don't listen to everyone telling you they will have to trade 1 of them. Ducks fans have heard that for 3 years.
Smyth - 6.25M
Horcoff - 5.5M
Hemsky - 5M

We are pretty much replacing this Trio with the kids.

One thing people forget is that RNH, Hall, Yakupov and J.Schultz all have a caphit of 3.775M each already (due to bonuses). EDM would be only adding ~2M in next contracts.

yes because guys like Jones, Horcoff, Smyth, Eager, Belanger etc are that bad a choice for bottom 6 (depth).

Not sure why people are saying the Oilers can't afford their 4 forwards:

NYR TOP 4 FORWARDS:

Nash - 7.8
Gaborik - 7.5
Richards 6.667
Callahan - 4.225

Avg: 6.548

Do you see the Oiler kids making as much as those players? I don't Especially with the rumored price of 36m over 6yrs. The cap can change dramatically by the end of the 6th yr.

Edit: The Rangers can also afford to add Shane Doan for 5m per.

EDIT 2: The Rangers bread and butter is their defense and goaltending, not their offense anyways. The Oilers forwards will make or break the team though. They are much more important to them than the Rangers forwards are to the Rangers. They can easily afford all 4 of them.

Do you care to bet anything that the Oilers will finish in last place in the next 3 years?

If no, how about avoiding making empty statements like that one in the future.

I do not see any reason why the Oiler's cannot keep the fab 4. Those who think they can't are simply blinded by hate/jealousy. And I am a Canucks fan with no love for the Oil...

If it's 7 years that means they bought out some of his UFA time.

I'll go with 7 years $45 million

Good for the Oilers, glad they are locking up these youngsters long term

I'll guess 5.75 per year

Pretty much what I'm saying yeah. Jones is useful, but very limited. Horcoff doesn't scare any one or accomplish much, Smyth is getting old and Eager and Belanger wouldn't make most NHL rosters. Plus some of these guys will be playing in the top 6.

If those guys were good enough, you wouldn't have picked 1st overall this year.

And then there's the defence... And a step below that... Dubnyk.

That is not the type of depth that's going to get you anywhere. Has something changed over the off-season that I missed? These guys weren't good enough to get it done last year and the year before, but suddenly they're depth to build around?

I'll lay it out for you. The Oilers have a lot of exciting young talent, and then a bunch of other forwards that seemed to be randomly thrown together with no cohesion or purpose. No one is physical enough, no real great PKers, and no impact centres right now. The defence is marginal at best and may be the worst unit 1-6 in the NHL. Dubnyk is terrible. He does not have NHL legs or quickness and is basically biding his time until he becomes the next Alex Auld. Watched him since Kamloops and followed goalies my entire life, he doesn't have it. I consider him in the bottom 5 of NHL starters. Easily.

Do I think the Oilers have a great nucleus of elite talent to work with? For sure, some great young players that will be a treat to watch. The problem is you build from the net out, not from the top line back down. Eventually the Oilers will need to address this. Or they will continue to struggle.

Oiler fans will have to come to grips with this. They've taken BPA as they should, but eventually you have to make a team out of it.

Ok, point taken.

But the fact is, the Oilers will never have an amazing, world-beating goaltender like a Halak or Smith. Lundqvist is old news and quite mediocre, or so this small, cherry-picked sample size tells me.
