Who'd you rather....?

If we somehow had the ability to acquire the first overall pick in the 2013 draft or the 2014 draft, which would you choose knowing what you know now?

I know little of the top guns in those drafts except for what I've read. On one hand you have Connor Mcdavid who was just granted exceptional status into the CHL, and on the other, Nathan Mackinnon who appears to be the clear front runner in what is considered to be a rather deep draft.

Which player/draft would you go with?

Or? For those of you familiar with the radio morning show on either 92 city fm or or Power 97;

Who'd you rather:

Rita MacNiel or Gary Betteman ?

I'd lean towards Mcdavid myself. I somehow feel that he'll have a higher ceiling. And Gary Betteman. Maybe I could get that life-sized bobble head to shake until he chips his teeth.

If we took bettman...who would pay off the ref's to make a bunch of weak calls against Canadian teams to prevent them from winning?

I'd pick 2013. Lots of great-sounding 2014 prospects, but it doesn't get much better than getting to choose between Jones and Mackinnon, so I don't see any reason to hold off.

Here's one I was asked a few weeks ago:

Would you rather go 16 years without NHL hockey if it meant winning a Stanley Cup, or have 16 years of NHL hockey with a below-average team and no Stanley Cup?

That's a loaded question. The way it's worded it sounds like you get both. Will the team never win? Because in the post it sounds like after 16years they will.

Either way, I'll take hockey everyday of the week.

You're trying to assess, based on their play as 16 and 17 year olds, how they'll project as NHLers? That's a mook's game.

I'd rather have a lifetime of below-average hockey and not a single Stanley Cup.

It's a game, not a job. We don't watch stats and treat them as year end reports. We do it cause it's interesting to us and helps us get through the cold freaking winter.

Anyone else see a resemblance between Gary Bettman and "the Count" from Sesame Street?

I'd fall for the next three years, then we have a better shot at winning 5-10 years, its worth it believe me.

2013: Seth Jones
2014: Jake Virtanen/Sam Reinhart
2015: Connor McDavid/Matthew Barzal/Nathan Noel

Virtanen-McDavid-Scheifele :amazed

Or how about we keep improving with the good young core we have, move some pieces around them, and compete just as well?

I'd pick the 2013 draft because I know more McKinnon, and he's projected at the top of a deep draft.

Agreed. Pretty sure I don't want to draw any similarities between us and the coilers.

This team has done it's fall for draft picks...
Bogosian - 3rd 2008
Kane - 4th 2009
Burmistrov - 8th 2010
Scheifele - 7th 2011
Trouba - 9th 2012

It's time to start moving up...

Besides we also got:
Ladd - 4th 2004
Wheeler - 5th 2004

After three years of sucking, who would have stuck around the team for these guys to play with?

Not sure what you are reading but Mackinnon is a 50/50 at best for first overall. Seth Jones is the front runner right now. And Mcdavid is not eligible for the 2014 draft, he'll be in 2015.

To answer your question, I would probably go with Jones this year rather than Reinhart in 2014, just because it would suck to be the worst team in the NHL two years from now.

My bad. Thought Mcdavid was eligible for 2014. I actually never heard of this reinhart, but I will look into him further.

Problem is that with Bogo - Buff - Enstrom, our need is not a defenceman. We need forwards. Maybe we can tank for 2nd...

A top 5 pick in 2013 would work quite well.

Any of MacKinnon, Jones, Monahan, Barkov or Shinkaruk would work for me. I'd be tempted to take Monahan.

MacKinnon will likely be an offensive dynamo. Monahan will likely be a very solid 200 ft player. I see benefits to either player. If we have the chance to take either, giddy up.
