My 2014 NHL Draft rankings

Hey guys,

I am not an actual scout, just a guy that loves junior hockey and the NHL draft. I have seen every player rankend at least once and the vast majority far more often. I did a Top 120 for skaters and a Top 10 for Goaltenders. The ranking includes things like character issues or the “russian factor“.

I'll be the first to ask about Haydn Fleury, why so low? How much of him have you watched? What don't you like?

I have seen him about seven or eight times.

There are numerous things I do not really like about him. First I do not see him as an amazing skater. He has good skating ability yes, but he is not close to being an elite skater. I also do not think he has such a high offensive upside. He gets points because he is Red Deer go to guy on defense. His passing abiltiy and shot just is not that great and I do not think he will be an effective PP guy in the NHL. Biggest question mark is his hockey sense. He does not read the game very well and makes to many bad decisions.

So, bad skating, bad passing, bad shot, bad hockey sense...yet he's projected as the 2nd highest defender in the draft.

Seven or eight times you say.

Good work. Only real question for me, why McCann at 31.

I never said he is bad at these things. I just think these aspects of him are a bit overrated. IMO he is not the next elite skating tall defenseman a la Jay Bouwmeester. And while he makes a solid outlet pass and improved his shot a bit I do not see him as a big scorer at the next level.
The fact that he is the 2nd highest rated dman in the draft just shows how bad this dman class is. Outside of Ekblad no defender is a legitimate Top 10 talent. Furthermore without the off ice issues deAngelo would be my second rated defender.

He seemed pretty inconsistent to me. Many times he was just invisible. At times he showed glimpses of a possible Top 10 pick though. I like is skating and his shot a lot and he is a pretty well rounded player aswell. I am questioning his consistency and I am not sure what his ultimate upside is. And whileh is hockey sense is not bad at all I have seen some terrible decision making from him at times.
I also think that the draft is very tight from 15 onwards and some guys like Point, Dougherty or Martin are some of my personal favorites which results in guys like McCann or Ho-Sang falling a bit further.

Just looking at the first 40 or so picks, you have a lot right. Especially guys like Scherbak being around 15.

To many people just take the mocks and go from there. Personally, I have Dal Colle at 3 but I know Im in the minority there. Also think Perlini is going to go around 8..

Just a couple of thoughts.

I actually had dal Colle higher for most of the year. There was a time were he was as high as 3rd. However I was just very impressed with Ehlers and Draisaitl in the late parts of the season. Ehlers outplayed Drouin quite often and scored on a 2 ppg pace basically from January until the end of the playoffs. And Draisaitl was just amazing at the mens WC.
Nevertheless if I look at some guys that went at No. 6 in the recent past (Gagner, Filatov, Connolly, Zibanejad, H. Lindholm) I feel that dal Colle is certainly a better prospect then the average 6th pick in a draft.

Perlini is a guy I thought could challenge for the Top 5 at Midseason, but he had a pretty poor second half of the season and his Under 18s were not really impressive either. That said I think the people that drop him to around 20 are doing a mistake. His combination of size, skating and shot is just too good to pass on him for so long.

Nice work. In comparing lists, it's truly amazing how much we agree on some players (Virtanen, Ritchie, Fabbry, Lemieux, MeKeown) and how much we disagree on others (Nylander, De Leo, DeAngelo, Larkin, MacInnis). It would be interesting to contrast our reports/insights on these players.

As far as the Americans listed. I have had several viewing of most of them. IMO Larkin should be the top American...Does a lot of the little things and plays all 200 ft. Tuch could end up phenomenal but too early to tell as it is hard to predict power forwards. He has the size to get there though. Milano, super skilled as everyone knows, but personally I like Larkin's two-way game better. I also see Hitchcock before I see Gersich. Hitchcock is a scorer and smart on the ice. Gersich is extremely athletic but out of position at times. These are just my opinions. You can't go wrong with any of the. Nice list, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out soon.

I mean I like some elements of this list, especially your appreciation of guys like Spencer Watson, Rourke Chartier, Kase, etc.. However, there are certain things I cannot get over. Brycen Martin ahead of Julius Honka, Alex Tuch ahead of Dylan Larkin, Edgars Kulda in the second round, and Arvin Atwal doesn't go anywhere within the first four rounds IMO.

Nylander in my opinion has star potential. He skates very well and has pretty good vision. One of the best goal scorers in the draft aswell. Had some difficulties early in the season and he needs to get better defensively, but he is a potentially franchise player and might have the most offensive upside in the whole draft.

deLeo has some good offensive upside. good skater, very good puck skills and has a pretty nice shot. Defensive game is not bad either, even though some people overrate his grit in my mind. But he is also one of the older players in the draft and he definitely benifits from playing for such a offensive minded team in Portland. I just do not see his upside as high as the upside of other smaller guys like Watson or Point.

deAngelo offensive game is just head and shoulders above every other blueliner in this draft. Defenseman with his skillset are very rare. The last CHL dman posting similar numbers in his draft year was Ryan Murphy. That was three years ago. His vision, passing and skating ability is incredible. Defensive game is a work in progress and off ice issues are worrying though. At the end of the day he is a high risk high reward type of pick.

Larkin could quite easily be 5 or even 10 spots higher. It is very tight from 15 onwards and it was pretty difficult to rank. He is a smart and pretty complete player and his game will probably translate well to the NHL. I just think that players like Pastrnak, Point or Goldobin have way higher offensive upside. Larkin can score aswell, but I think his ceiling is a 2C 45 points type of player. I personally like to go for highly potential players early, because big time scores are very though to get.

MacInnis is the type of player that could turn out as a big steal oder as a complete bust. He has great size and throughout the year he learned how to use his frame better. He is pretty incosistenst, but he has all the tools to put up good numbers at the NHL level. Good hockey sense, heavy shot and not afraid to go to the front of the net. Skating needs improvement and he is already working on that, which is visible. The fact that his dad is a Hall of Famer does not hurt either.

You could be right, but this is not a Mock Draft.

Martin is a favorite of mine. He has size, skates very well, makes very good outlet passes and his offensive upside is very high. Some people question his hockey sense, but this is not an issue IMO. He struggeld a bit down the stretch and not being invited hurt his draft stock. However I still like him as a player and have faith in him.

Tuch has great size and physicality. For a big guy he skates pretty well. Not really a creative player, but he can finish plays and is very effective when paired with a playmaking Center. He is great on the forecheck and I like his play away from the puck in general. I feel with the right linemates he could be a 60 point winger that impactes the game with and without the puck.

Kulda was a beast during the WHL playoffs and at the Memorial Cup. He was arguably the best player on a team that has players like Lazar, Samuelsson and G. Reinhart.
Kulda works hard and plays with a lot of energy. He is good around the net and plays bigger then his size is. He can skate and has a very high hockey IQ. I really do not see why you would not like a guy like him. Does not have a major weakness and lifts his play up when it matters.

I like Atwal because he is physical and has sort of a mean streak. Skating is alright and he has solid offensive upside. IMO he plays a solid all around game. He is raw and a bit of a project, but I believe that he has some untapped potential and he is totally worth a late round pick.

pretty solid list. A lot of players we agree on( Reinhart, Draisaitl, Nylander, Scherbak, Milano, Bleackley Dougherty, Sanheim, Martin).
Only things I really disagree are the placements of Perlini and Pettersson.
