He had a down year in the regular season, followed by some pretty good playoffs by all accounts. The season before he was AHL goalie of the year and a 1st team all-star. What has Zatkoff proven so far that makes him NHL-ready? That he's 4 inches taller?
Zatkoff has played well at every level and showed continued improvement. Theissen didn't just have a down season, he was dreadful. Bottom line, the Pens gave Zatkoff a two-year contract and Theissen a one-year contract. Seems like an unusual deal (2-years) to give someone (UFA goalie) unless they think he can handle NHL duty if called upon.
