Over-Ear Headphones

Hey all,

Looking for a good pair of over-ear headphones to ask for this Christmas. Price range I'm looking for is in-between $100-$150. I like a good bass, but I'm open to any suggestions. I know Beats by Dre are way overpriced so I'm not looking for them, plus they don't really fit in my price range.

Thanks

+1 for the ATH M50s. Likely the best pair of headphones in that price range you can get.

They have the best head phones down to a science. Some very smart people over that way. Stay away from the big name brands like Beats and Monster.

If you want closed cups, my personal preference are these:
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-...nheiser+HD+280

For open headphones, go with these:
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-504...eywords=hd+555

Bottom line is DO NOT BUY from Monster/Beats, Skullcandy, or Bose. Those brands are either overpriced, crap, or overpriced crap. Stick with companies like Sennheiser, Shure, Grado, or Audio-Technica.

Sennheiser makes amazing headphones. My personal favourite is the Sennheiser HD 598s. I'd strongly recommend them if you can stretch your budget to 200-250ish. Also agree to avoid Monster/Bose. I own two pairs of Beats (Studio & Pro) and they're not even close to the ATH-M50s in sound quality and not even in the same stratosphere as the Sennheider HD 598s.

Also, if you're interested in the ATH-M50s, The Sound Professionals currently has a sale on them where you can get them for around $120 shipped.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find when the deal expires. I found it when I was checking my email and they sent it 4 days ago so I'd assume maybe 3-10 days? Most deals seem to be 1-2 weeks.

I haven't had the pleasure of trying the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro yet so I won't be able to give you a comparison but Sennheiser is an excellent company to purchase headphones from. If you're willing to go up a bit, I'd highly recommend the Sennheiser HD 598s. I own numerous pairs of headphones and I rarely use anything else because I love the 598s that much. Super comfortable and excellent sound quality. Current best deal I can find is here for $237.30 shipped, including import fees, if you're willing to deviate a bit from your budget.

If you don't mind open headphones, go for the Beyerdynamic DT-990s. They'll have a better soundstage than ATH-M50s, given that they're an open design, but still have nice bass. Great buy for ~$150. I just picked up a pair to complement my AKG Q701s (also great cans but they're over $200).

If you want closed headphones, the ATH-M50s are a good buy for ~$150, but you'll get a better sound and better bass if you spend a little more on DT-770s.

Surprisingly good. Best Bluetooth headphones I have ever listened to, too. Price is great for a solid OTE wireless set-up. It took forever for me to find the right pair.

Frankly, unless you're going to be listening to pure FLAC or WAV files or records on a high end turntable, I wouldn't worry about buying an amazing set. You're just going to be listening to compressed, distorted **** and it would be a waste of money to go much over $150 or so.

Don't forget the DAC and amp too. Most $200+ headphones require a good amp to drive them.

I guess I should have mentioned that when I recommended the DT990s; they have a 250 ohm impedance so they'll probably feel a little underpowered when listening to them straight from a phone or iPod.

Talk about overstatement. Getting a ~$150-200 set of headphones still makes all the world of difference when listening to mp3s (with or without an amp). If the OP has nothing but 128kbps files, your statement would hold some truth. But if they're listening to, say, V0 or 320kbps, the difference in quality will be obvious. Let alone using the headphones for things like movies and gaming.

To those who have used the Sennheiser HD 598s how is the bass? A lot of the music I listen to is heavy in bass so I'm looking for something that has good bass but nothing too punchy like the Beats I currently have. I want to feel it, not get hit with it.

It's not bad but the 598s do a much better job with mids. Personally, I have no problems with it but really it varies from person to person.

Checked out the cheapest Bose over ear head phones with the noise cancellation. They sounded pretty damn good to me. Owned the cheapest sennheiser over ears for a couple weeks before I sat on them:/ looking for some new ones myself, thinking about treating myself to the Bose I demoed at futureshop. Sounded really nice, and 149 isn't too bad

Strongly disagree with those who say stay away from Monster headphones and lump them in with Beats. Yes, Beats is overrated flashy junk, but much of Monster's line is quality.

The Monster Inspiration phones are a great purchase at around $150. They have a pretty flattish frequency response without the artificial bass and treble boost of the Beats. You'll want the passive ones, not the active noise-canceling ones. Those are about a hundred bucks more.

Note that Monster doesn't make the Beats line anymore, the name was taken over by TDK some time ago. Monster now competes with Beats.

I am also a Sennheiser devotee. ATM I own four pairs of Sennheiser in-ears and the HD429 over-ears. All of them are great. Even the $20 and $30 Sennheiser HD201 and HD202 are pretty freaking amazing.

If you are a serious basshead the Sony XB500 and XB700 are insane bass monsters. So much so that your source better have a good EQ because you will have to take some bass out.

You will also want to check out the Panasonic and JVC stuff and don't overlook the enthusiast boutique brands: Brainwavz, Soundmagic, Meelectronics, etc.

I'm on head-fi.org, good site to check out. Lots of people there who know heaps more than me too.
