Simpler alternatives to photoshop for designing hockey cards?

So I'm trying to use photoshop to design a hockey card and having a hell of a time because I never bothered to learn the program, the tutorials aren't helping out, and it just seems like it would take too long to accomplish simple things even if I did become better at using it. This program also seems better suited to fixing images.

So I was wondering if anyone knew of a program (preferably an inexpensive one) which would be simpler/better at designing hockey cards.

I did make a couple using photoscape but that one is awful at doing things like adding lines or a custom gradient or adding in any graphics, it's mainly just for adding some text and moving images around, adding a border, etc.

thx

I'd rather just use photoshop than gimp tbh. Gimp's not really any easier though it is better for Windows.

I was thinking something along the lines of photoscape but a bit better at drawing designs and templates and cropping stuff.

I think I might still use photoshop if I wanna add an effect to the picture but not beyond that.

EDIT: I'm gonna use paint.net and inkscape and post here how it goes. I found a blog by some guy who apparently does some card designs using inkscape and they look really nice plus he has a template going.

I really wanna do something like this since it fits the theme of doing retro cards for guys who just retired like Lidstrom:
