Hypothetically if we miss the playoffs and somehow win the lottery would we trade up for another top 5 pick? Noeson/Puempel+++ Or should we trade down from 1st overall to like 2nd or 3rd overall?

In other terms, what is the next "tier" after Jones/MacKinnon/Drouin/Barkov/Mohanan/Lindholm?
There seem to be 6 guys in the next tier.

It would seem Nichushin is now at the front of that list after the 5 Nations tourney, a big rangy winger with high end skills. ISS just released their ratings and had him as the top forward ahead of all of the forwards in the top two tiers you reference above. Other scouts have mentioned him in the top 5 now. He is another goal scoring winger from Russia following Tarasenko and Kuznetsov, only bigger (albeit less proven than those two at this stage obviously). Has made an impact at every level this season, including a decent showing at the WJC (ended Canada's tourney in overtime).

The other forward is Hunter Shinkaruk. A smaller guy and not an elite skater, but he has high end hands and goal scoring abilities. Outside shot at being an Eberle type. Or not. Tough to tell, but not many people 'dislike' him. Seems like he will be some kind of goal scorer at the pro level.

Then you have four defencemen in the mix. Rasmus Ristolainen is considered a very safe bet. Big frame and solid overall ability with no glaring weaknesses. No eye popping skills per se, but a lot to like. Ryan Pulock is another all-around type, albeit in a smaller frame. But has a big point shot, makes open ice hits and has definite top pairing upside. Darnell Nurse is a big mean d-man playing in the Soo. Nastier than most, with some untapped offensive potential. A lot of scouts think he has the highest upside of the d-men not named Jones. And then there is Nikita Zadorov, a hulking Russian now playing in the OHL who is massive, skates well for his size and has decent puck handling abilities.

For my part, I like Nurse the best out of the that six, but it's still early and others might rise up, including Morrissey, Erne, Mantha, Domi, Lazar, Wennberg, Horvat and Gauthier amongst others

I like Nurse, Mantha & Gauthier, I would guess Mantha & Gauthier to be available around 15th give or take, Nurse a little earlier.

Draft scenario: draft Mantha with our first & use the 2nd we get for Gonchar plus Hoffman or Da Costa to move up to get Gauthier.

I wish Murray would seriously give Nichushkin a look. He's supremely talented and looks like he plays hard every game. He may not be as talented as Yakupov or Tarasenko, but he has undeniable skill (something we need desperately) and at least plays hard when he's not scoring.

Just do the work, scout him, interview him, decide if he's in the Yakupov/Grigs camp (desperate to play in the NHL whatever it takes) or the Radulov camp (entitled and $$-hungry). Don't immediately write him off because he's Russian.

For those posters talking about Jones, Mackinnon, Drouin, and the like, it should be mentioned that as much as I'd love to have one of those guys, realistically, we're at best picking in the mid 1st round, given how competitive we still are, and even if we miss the playoffs, the NHL would never in a million years have us win the lottery. This is the same league that game in and game out, allows its refs to blatantly skew the calling of the game in the other team's favour.

Yeah I don't see us with much of a chance at the top 5 picks unless something drastically changes.

Curtis Lazar, Rasmus Ristolainen and Alexander Wennberg interest me the most for where Ottawa is likely to draft. Hopefully they're not all gone by the time we get there.

Lazar is as our organization stands now. He'd be a great 3rd line centre though with Zibanejad gone if we have O'Reilly, and if we don't get O'Reilly he could develop into a great shut-down 2nd line centre.

I think Gauthier is in there. He's a pretty good skater for a 6'5/200+ lbs guy and he's a ppg rookie in the Qmjhl

If you are picking in the top half of the 1st round, we should be aiming a bit higher than a great 3rd liner. And worrying about a current or future need is pretty futile. If Lazar is the top impact guy on the board, great, but if overall there is a potentially more impactful winger or d-man, we should go that route.

The bottom line is we are not overly loaded at any particular position that it should concern us when drafting an 18 year old. Especially in the 1st round.

I don't think it's impossible for us to get a top 5 pick.

Since losing Karlsson (last 3 games), we've scored on average less than 2 goals per game. Now, that's too small of a sample size to say that the rest of the year will continue like that, but I still don't think it's ridiculous to say that we will average roughly 2.25 goals per game (we currently average 2.29). That would put us in the bottom 5 in the NHL.

Now, I really don't think Craig Anderson is going to be able to play like this for the full season. I'd love it if he could, but if he continued this pace for the rest of the year he would have the most successful season in NHL history. Let's say that for the rest of the year he has a .920 save percentage. Upper-echelon, would probably give him top 5 numbers in the NHL at the very least. Since losing Karlsson (it's actually the same versus the rest of the year), we average around ~32 shots against per game. Assuming Anderson's SP is .920 for the rest of the year, that's 2.66 goals against per game. That would put us right at 15th in the NHL for GAPG.

With a GFPG of ~2.25 and a GAPG of ~2.66, we're going to be losing a lot more then we're going to be winning. This is all hypothetical, I just don't think it's unrealistic to think that we finish the year in the bottom 6. More hypothetical scenarios, but lets say in the remaining 31 games we finish 12-16-3. Not an unreasonable expectation IMO. That would give us a final record of 21-22-5. That would give us a winning percentage of .438 .

If we were to put that into the pace of this year, we would be 24th (7th last).
If we were to put that into the pace of last year, we would be 29th (2nd last).
If we were to put that into the pace of two years ago, we would be 28th (3rd last).

Just a lot of hypothetical babble, but I'm just trying to show that it's not unrealistic to think we could have a high pick this year. If you think Andy's play is sustainable and that our goals for will improve from earlier in the season, than all of what I wrote above is stupid.
