Jordan Staal or James Van Riemsdyk – Who Wins the Fresh Start Challenge?

2nd homes for 2 x 2nd overall draft picks. THW's Stephen Stoneman uniquely breaks down this matchup here:

Interesting info on van Riemsdyk. It will be interesting to see how he plays on the Leafs with a more important role.

Not a '2nd chance' for Staal. All it is for him is getting more playing time, he would have stuck it out until contract's end without creating a scene. Better would be Schenn vs JVR.

I think the author just trying something a little different > 2nd NHL home for 2 former 2nd overall picks - making it a worthy a unique spin as far as comparisons go.

Jordan Staal is clearly a different class of player, he's a total stud worth WAYYYYY more than JVR. Still very excited to see what JVR can do in Toronto with more offensive responsibility than he got in Philly, but I wouldn't compare him to a player like Jordan Staal.

I expect Staal will outscore JVR this year, but I still expect a solid season from JVR. Hard to say who will be better in the long-run.

I expect Staal to out score JVR this season and every other one; from now until they both retire.

Staal didn't need a fresh start, he's just going to a new city...

The player who wins by default doesn't wear the Leafs jersey.

Hoping Versus Knowing

Funny that we are hoping JVR has a breakout season, but you know Staal is going to light it up with his brother.

I bet they'll have the exact same number of points this year.

Pretty awful artical with mistakes both from an editorial pont of view and a factual one. Niether player is garunteed first line minutes, it's seem quite likely both will be on the second line.

That being said I like JVR and his potential. I was happy we got him though I would have liked to keep Luke. Lets hope he grows into a 60-70 point power forward who can stay healthy, If he does we won the trade. Who really cares about Staal unless it's olympics time ?

You seem pretty certain about this. There are no guarantees in hockey and Eric Staal has really come down in terms of his play in recent years.

I don't know if he's really come down, he had a rough start last year but has still hovered around the 70 point to PPG mark every year pretty much. Reminds me more of Mats Sundin than any center in the league right now. But I don't think he and his brother will end up playing that much together, Jordan is a born center too and I can't see Carolina putting all there eggs in one basket with the two of them on the same line. I'd say if Jordan plays a full season something like 30 goals, 65 points is a good estimate.

I don't think he has the natural skill that JVR has but he is more willing to use his size and gets rewarded more often for it.

There are no guarantees J Staal will do well just because he's playing with his brother either. I think he'll do well.

I think Jordan will do better. JVR still has a ways to go.

I don't think it's set in stone that Staal will light it up it could take him a while to start producing like he should because of playing that defensive shutdown role in Pittsburgh may be ingrained into him,old habits die hard could be a factor here.

I would liked to have had both on the Leafs but Staal wanted to go to Carolina to play on the same team as his brother however I think JVR will play well here, he is big and fast and if there is a chance he can play center, we will have a pretty good first line and a pretty good 2nd line too.

JVR at center, may have better year here than Staal in Carolina but only time will tell.
